Default Sound hickups every few minutes with Onkyo reciever

I hooked the main FIOS TV box up to my receiver for 3.1 sound (working on 5.1) but so far my Game of Thrones experience is diminished by random audio skips where .3 seconds of audio gets dropped. It's very distracting.

Is there any cure for this? I tried switching my receivers mode from Dolby to direct since I heard that can lessen the clicking noises it makes when switching inputs or coming out of a lul in volume but it didnt help. The skips/hickups are still there.

Can it be a volume overload cutoff?
(Dragon roars can be loud.)

HDMI from the FIOS box to my Onkyo TX-NR535 receiver.

Try leaving your receiver out of the loop. That is, optical cable into >>ONT>>DVR>>TV.
If that works fine, then you know the problem is with the ONKYO.
