Default Home theater system

I was looking at the Onkyo HT SR800 which got good reviews. The only problem is that the speakers are too big. I don't mind buying the reciever and subwoofer separate and then looking for speakers later, but I don't know which reciever or subwoofer is in this package or if it's even sold separately. Any suggestions on another home theater in a box or receiver and subwoofer sold separately. By the way, I am not looking to blow the roof off my house or anything. Just want something pretty good...looking to spend $500 for everything. Any suggestions?

If you don't want to use 7.1 and only use 5.1 (which many do) you can use the 4 smaller speakers and not use the 2 larger ones. I have set it up that way for many friends and it sounds spectacular since there is a sub-woofer no problems. BTW that 800 system is great.

But even the small speakers seem big. These are the dimensions I found:
Tuner (WxHxD): 17-1/8" x 5-3/8" x 14-13/16"
Subwoofer (WxHxD): 10-3/8" x 20-1/16" x 16-3/16"
Front (WxHxD): 6-3/16" x 17-1/16" x 7-3/8"
Center (WxHxD): 17-1/16" x 6-3/16" x 7-3/8"
Surround (WxHxD): 6-5/8" x 10-1/2" x 3-3/8"

Yes the speakers are a bit larger than many other HTIB's, but they and the sub are very good (for HTIB speakers), and the best you will find near its $399 price tag. The speakers and sub have better richer sound vs many of those little plastic sat speakers that are light as a feather. I recommended this to a friend a little over a year ago for good HTIB for under $500. He loves it to this day. If the speakers seem too big for you, perhaps getting your component seperate would be a better choice.

Here is a nice little setup for around $578. A bit over you $500 limit, but worth it if your looking for the perfect fit. You can find the speakers a bit cheaper on the web..
