Default Front tower choices

Ok, I've been to AVS and I'm also posting here about my conundrum for front tower speaker choices.

As some may or may not know, I work at BB. This means I pay essentially cost for some nice mid-end speakers. I've been pondering the Def-Tech 7002s for a while and when my birthday and tax rebates roll around, I can finally pull the trigger on them. My uses are primarily home theater (75%) and some music (25%). I'm a little worried that the mids may be overpowered by the subwoofer though, and I do like my mids and mid-bass, but I also want detailed highs and clean bass. Is this asking too much from one set of speakers? Many BB brands in Magnolia are good, but they excel at one and not the other. I'm basically looking for a good, well-rounded speaker set that I can build upon.

I've also been pondering other brands. I've been looking at the PSB Image 65 towers (which I have yet to demo) and the internet direct Rocket RS760 at AV123.com.

My budget is around $1200 for the pair. I am planning to build around this system, so a subwoofer and center would come later.

I personally like the Definitive Technology speakers as well but please do yourself a favor and audition some Paradigm Monitor 9's or 11's. I think that once you hear them you will make a much more well informed choice.

Heh, I knew you were going to say that. Are the monitors that good? I have a dealer right next to the BB I work at that deals with high end Sony XBR/ES and Paradigm audio and the guys come in from time to time and we shoot the breeze because I'm one of the few at my store who know audio moreso than the average BB salesperson.

I've been looking at the Studio series, but I almost feel the Monitor 9 or 11s are "low end" for Paradigm, but nothing I'm looking at is high-end.

How much do the Monitors retail for?

Their monitor series is midline whereas their Studio line is their high end.. Their monitor line which has recieved nothing but great reviews is always compared to competition 2-3x their cost.. I would at least audition them, as I was in the same situation as you and as soon as I heard Paradigm at a friends dads house I was sold.. Only Problem for me is the one and only store here in AZ that sells them is currently closed

Here is a site that gives details on almost all of the Paradigm lines and pricing..
http://www.legacyaudiovideo.com/paradigm1.html

However with as much as you will be using them for cinema purposes that is where I believe Definitive shines best.. You can always adjust the speakers if you wanna take away some low frequency bass..

But just do yourself a favor and audition the Paradigm Monitor series, worst case is you dont fall in love with them..

The Monitor 11's retail for $1199 and compared to my neighbors Def Tech 2004's we both agree the Monitors sound better (less muddy). Of course I do have a very good sub-woofer as well which is important.

Well, the Monitior 11s are right in my price range. I'll give them an honest look. Thanks.

I stopped in that shop today and demoed some Monitor 11 and 9 and Studio 60 and 100. It also helped that they have a new guy there with whom I worked alongside with at BB for a while.

Anyways, I wasn't that impressed with the Monitor series. The mids were decent, but the tweeter seemed to lack detail and seemed also muffled at points. It was running off of a Sony ES4300 receiver, which I don't know if that had anything to do with it or not. I liked the mids, which were pronounced with good bass, but the tweeter was lacking. Any explanation?

I was impressed with the Studio 60 and 100s though, albeit out of my price range. Damn.

I think if you had a better receiver the Monitors would have revealed themselves. A Denon, Onkyo, Integra, HK or practically anything other than that Sony would have lit those speakers up.

I dislike Sony receivers a lot. Do you honestly think it was the receiver? I'm almost inclined to think a receiver can only do so much. Wouldn't the speakers do much more for sound than a receiver?

I have noticed I do prefer a warmer tone for music, though.

Yes, I do believe it was the receiver. See if they can demo it for you with another receiver, any other and you will hear just what I mean.

I would be putting them with my Yamaha, so warmth is something they may get.

Any other speakers you can recommend? I know you like your Paradigms (which model do you have?). I've read a lot about PSB lately and they seem to be similar to the Paradigms in price and performance. The are 6 ohm speakers though, so do you think I'd have a problem if I chose to get them with my lower end Yamaha (100 wpc, 6.1)?

Your Yamaha should have a red switch on the back that toggles between 6 and 8 ohm's.. Mine did and it is very similar to yours.

I have also been looking into PSB's Image series and plan on auditioning them this weekend. The great thing that led me to Paradigm aside from the amazing sound was that they are super efficient in that they do not need a ton of power to make them sound amazing..

If you hear something on the PSB's let us know your take on it..

Will do. I have no idea if I'll be able to audition them this weekend or not, but I will try. Give us your take on the PSB as well, I'm interested to hear it.

Actually there is the Signature Series which is their top-end. I was previewing them last night, and I'm seriously going to be looking at the Studio Series. For now I might just go with a 5.1 setup, maybe 6.1. Will probably go with the ADP's in the rear.

You are correct sir they do have thier Signature series but to be honest I dont ever see myself paying that much for a speaker barring winning the lottery..

Update I have an appointment tonight to audition some of PSB's Image Towers and Center channels.. I will report back in the am on what I think.
