Update:

The local Paradigm dealer really wants my business due to the fact that we know each other and he knows that I send people there to buy things, even when I work at Best Buy. They have an offer for me on speakers.

I have ruled out Def-Techs as I don't want a powered tower (more to go wrong) and I feel like the bi-polar design wouldn't be an optimal choice.

I did add the KEF iQ9s to the mix, as those are the types of speakers I'm looking for. I have demoed those yet, but what do you others thing of the KEF speakers?

Speakers still in contention:
Paradigm Monitor 11s/Studio 60s.
PSB Image T65

and now KEF iQ9.

the studio 60's are simply put, AMAZING!! for what you pay you get so much more. There is a reason that paradigm has gotten awards up the yazoo for the past 25 years. Thier speakers are top notch and never disapoint! especially the studio series.

I loved the Studio 60s, but at $1800 or so per pair, it was out of my price range. The owner is willing to make me a deal and the buddy of mine that works there has some Paradigm rewards he's willing to let me use as well. I just have to get the money together. School and rent are first.

I love having connections, though.

I really enjoy KEFs bookshelfs and sats but I am not a big fan of their towers. I would say they are a bit on the bright side but that may just be me..

I see you have maybe ruled out Monitor Audio but I think you should try and give them a listen the RS6 is nothing to scoff at. Here is a review from Stereophile magazine and what they had to say about it

http://www.stereophile.com/floorloud...tor/index.html
Quote:
When John Atkinson suggested that I review the Monitor Audio Silver RS6, I never expected the level of realism I ended up hearing from this loudspeaker. There's nothing much more I can say—the flawless and exceptional Silver RS6 gave me more listening pleasure than any other loudspeaker I have reviewed for Stereophile. In my more than 20 years of reviewing, I have not reviewed an audio component that produced greater sound quality per dollar than Monitor Audio's Silver RS6.
I really wanted Paradigm speakers but it seems that every time I think someone near me sells them its just direct manufacture where I can not audition them and so on. I will not buy something blindly so right now Monitor Audio's silver line RS6 and their Gold bookshelfs are on my list, as well as Jm Labs Focal's bookshelfs which I must say have been THE best speaker I have auditioned thus far.. If you have someone near you who sells them I would say give them a listen..

I have some info that may help. I myself ruled out deftects for two reasons. 1. the built in subs was to much low end for the towers as I wanted a seberate sub to do that work and would do it better. 2. I wasn't that inpressed with the bipolar either. I was at BB yesterday and listened to everything there using my music just cause I like to. When I listended to the Marting logans they were very good, but there was only one sweet spot. when I moved the sound dampened. The speakers that I have are the mirage omnisateV2. They are omnipolar which I prefer over bipolar and they have a good clean sound. The only other speakers I heard which were very very good were the vienna acoutics tower speakers. They were the ones for about $1000 each. They sounded almost just as good as the martin logans but the sweet spot was much larger and took up the whole room. The Mirage towers at BB are $500 a piece but I know also that those are only the omnisatesV2s and that mirage makes many other high end towers that I would very much like to hear, but I can't find anyone close that carrys them. I keep encouraging corporate BB to invest in in the higher end mirages but to no avail. hope this helps some.

I've pretty much ruled out speakers at BB, Magnolia included.

auditioning speakers at home.

First off, I have read the posts on this thread and am delighted to hear someone taking the time to find speakers which suit their desires. I just recently got rid of a set of speakers purchased in 1980 which served long and well. I had to struggle to purchase them back then, but good speakers can repay their initial investment many times over, as these did.

As to the lost art....in the past audio salons would let you take home a demo set of speakers to see how theyperformed in your home. The supermarket av stores have pretty well killed that, but possibly you could talk your friend into a weekend audition of a couple different speakers. What sounds good in their showroom may sound "wrong" in your home. EQ circuits can only flatten the response curve they can't cure many of the problems which actually detract from a speakers optimal performance. Houses are made to live in and rarely have sound reproduction taken into account when they are designed. Often, one brand of speaker will really shine in the same room that a another equally fine speaker model will sound awful in...have experienced this many times. Mind you, a person can USUALLY get even the poor sounding model to come up to its full potential but it takes some playing with placement and usually adding some sort of sound treatment in the room (bass traps and/or non reflective surfaces).

So, tell this guy you want the BEST and to put up with a home demo so you will be pleased and garner him many new customers

Best of luck and happy listening...or viewing!

Ed

ps: Sony receivers aren't my flavor either...not awful...just not great IMO

I never liked Sony receivers. When I was a young lad at 18 starting at BB, I noticed the hollow sound and cheapness to the Sony AVRs.

I'm all about weighing my options and getting the best I can for the money. To me, speakers are an investment that can be very rewarding. After all, I deal with people who have speakers that are 20 years old and still love them. I see no reason why I could not keep any of the brands of speakers I want for 20 years (albeit, I still may get hit with the "upgradeitis" bug).

I can always buy the speakers I want and if they fail to wow me or perform like I want them to, I will just return them. That is not a big deal to me.

Corporate BB will never listen. They are in it for the money, not the love of home theater. Even Magnolia selections are mediocre by many standards.

Well Codes it appears as I am no longer in a front speaker Dilemma, I have moved onto subwoofers and man are those even becoming a headache

I went with the PSB Image T65, I know I said before they were to plain looking but they sounded nice. Well after seeing these again in person in the black finish and than finding a place in southern California selling them at near wholesale prices I was sold.. The others I mentioned just have not panned out, Paradigm and Monitor Audio were my only other choices and trying to buy them in Arizona is worse than pulling teeth. So I bought the PSBs online but also talked to PSB and because of the circumstances I still get full manufacture warranty..

Where are you at in your search for fronts? Have you narrowed it down to a few companies or are you still keeping your options open?

Two ways to demo.

(1) Get a pair on trial.. I would not go with a whole 5.1 + system until I was sure.

(2) I believe AV123 has a listing of owners willing to let you listen in different parts of the country.

I have not heard them myself, but read excellent things about them (pro and owner reviews).
And can't recall anyone wanting to send them back.

When I shopped for my speakers, I listened to RS6s also. Very fine speakers. I could live with them very easily too. But speakers are really a personal thing as far as your senses go.

Lilmase- I'm still keeping my options open. It'll still be a two months before I'm ready to purchase though. The PSB 65s are so intriguing though. How much did you end up paying for those? Was it Upscale Audio or Saturday Audio that you purchased from? I know of those is in Cali, the other's in Chicago and I get them mixed up.

daleb- I agree that the Rockets seem nice. I haven't found anyone willing to demo in my area or the Twin Cities metro area/Rochester. I also almost fear that some do not send them back because shipping is kind of a pain to do and pay for.

I've wondered about that myself, although they do get some great reviews. I am sure (as I alluded to before) it would not be difficult to find more than one speaker you like, even within the same price range. Many fine ones out there. Almost like comparing equal quality paints, it gets done to personal color preference. Some pun intended there, after all nothing is perfect.
Problem is there are so many out there, it is unlikely you will have the opportunity to audition even half of them. But it is fun!

No kidding. The hard thing is convincing my girlfriend it's worthwhile to get good speakers and to go out and demo them. She just states "Get the ones from BB, they sounded good."

Please, like they would settle for jewelery that looked good without looking at everything else.
