SVS has a pretty solid performer...the PB-10NSD and it sells for around $429.00.

Velodyne makes some dam good subs and many in the sub (no pun) $500 range. It depends on the room size off course. I would give them a listen. The DPS12 is 1 great sub IMO and can be had for around $500 shipped. Vann's has it for $550 shipped, but can be found cheaper.

The VRP-1200 for around $350 shipped is also a great deal IMO, but I preffer the DPS12..

HSU is another good choice as is the SVS chester mentioned..

Anybody know how the Klipsch Synergy powered 10" & 12" subs stack up compared to the ones mentioned? I appreciate all this input.

The Klipsch Synergy SUB-12 is a wonderful performer in that price range. I would put it up against anything listed easily, especially for sound quality. Definitely put it on your list. Bring each home and try them out and see which one you like best. Remember to set up each sub properly in your room and into your system before making your decision.

Check out the subs at www.edesignaudio.com They custom make your sub and are very reaonable. I got the A5-300 for $550 and it shipped for free. It is 128lbs and is awesome.

I have a Klipsch Sub-12 and am extremely pleased with it. It can deliver bass that you feel in your chest! This thing continues to impress me every time I watch a movie that utilizes it's capabilities. Highly recommended ~ $500 I think.

In the price bracket (? $500-600), Hsu, SVS, Klipsch, Velodyne are probably the big hitters. There are others I'm sure.
You can find several reviews from S&V and Home Theater mag on budget subs. Use that for a guideline, as well as owner's experiences.
Bring your favorite bass DVDs to a dealer for comparison.
Of course, like with any speaker, room setup is a major consideration.
