Default 5.1 signal with 6.1/7.1 receiver

I need an AV receiver with HDMI support that will work on a 5.1 optical signal for use with a PS3, however, the only receivers that I can find with HDMI in/out are at least 6.1, what I'm asking is if you can plug a 5.1 speaker set-up into a 6.1 or 7.1 receiver and any suggestions for under 300

Thanks

28 views no replies? Just a yes or no answer will do, will a 6.1 receiver work with 5.1 optical?

Yes.

That's your short answer.
I have a Sony 6.1 receiver, but only have a 5.1 speaker setup at the present time. Plan to add the rear center later.
I like my Sony STR-DG500 (new models are 510 w/HDMI), because of the auto calibration feature.

Thanks for the reply I was looking at the 510 as it happens, could you give a quick explanation on how to choose a 5.1 set of speakers that will work? does the power rating have to match exactly?

I wouldn't worry too much about power ratings, unless you buy really small, cheap speakers. If you do that, you probably wouldn't want to crank up the volume to ear-splitting levels, for fear of blowing the speakers. But, otherwise nothing to worry about.

Just look around at what's available, and pick a set that fits your budget and your room. About any speakers in the budget range you mentioned will get you a good set of basic speakers. The way I look at it....pretty much anything you get, will be a tremendous improvement over the TV speakers.
