Default Sound Bar Options

We moved to a new house, and my new living room isn't ideal for an easy surround HT install. New speakers will have to be purchased for in-wall installation, and everything will be running out of a closet that will have to be wired etc. This is a project I'm not prepared to take on right now.

Does anyone have experience with quality sound bars? I know they won't be as good as a true HT surround system, but I'm hoping to get something that is at least significantly better than the TV's speakers. Especially to get more bass output.

I currently have an Onkyo AVR handling switching for a gaming/media PC, my U-verse STB, and my Blu-Ray player. Right now, it's all HDMI to the TV, but if I understand correctly, I would be able to use an optical cable to run from the TV to the sound bar?

Budget is as high as $400.

Just go 3.1 until you can get around to going in wall. It’s going to sound better than any budget soundbar.

Any particular brand you'd look for? I'm seeing Klipsch and Polk in my price range.

Depends on your taste. Polks are solid I have a set . If you like the horn tweeter sound Klipsch are really good.

My current 5.1 is an almost 15 year old Polk "package" I got from Crutchfield. Still sounds amazing. All they do is speakers, so it makes sense they're some of the best.

https://m.ebay.com/itm/Paradigm-9seM...AAAOSwj1haijB5
If you decide to just do front r,l,c I would highly recommend the above link that would take care of your right and your left and you could get away without a sub and all you would need to do would be to find a Center channel and all of paradigm line are timber or sonically match to one another so that is what I would do and if you want to add sub or surround later you'll be all set. that is a h*** of a price in its local then for pick up Plenty of ~$100 paradigm center channels on eBay as well. That also gives you a sweet music setup for 2ch stereo listening. My $0.02

If you just want a bigger sound but donít want to lay out the cash and time ( IMO time is just as important as cash). Iíve seen the Vizios with the BT sub getting decent reviews . I used to avoid Vizio like the plague but since getting the P series 4k set they offer I have changed my mind on that score.

I've heard lots of good things about the Vizio options actually. I just couldn't as an "enthusiast" bring myself to actually look at them. But if you're saying you got a 4K set from them and you like it, maybe it's time to put my nose back down.
