Default Have wireless speakers evolved to challege wired speakers?

While I research a replacement for my Sharp LC-45GD4U LCD TV that is going on the fritz, I am wondering if I should upgrade my surround system as well. I currently have a Sony STR-DE997 receiver with a wired 7.1 speaker set-up.
What I am wondering is whether wireless technology has advanced enough to challenge wired systems for range, quality, etc.
Any insight is appreciated. Thank you!

Sonos. I have two Play 1's, a Play 3 and a Play 5. Love 'em.

While the quality had improved and is fine for some it does not approach the level of quality of good word speakers. All about expectations and standards.

I'm looking and going into the Sonos system. Not looking for knock you out of your seat craziness, just better more robust sound then my TV offers.

My brother-in-law has a Bose wireless system with Center, R, L fronts with subwoofer and am amazed at the surround he gets in the living room, watching TV with Dolby 5.1. These bookshelf speakers do a nice surround production. They have a vaulted ceiling in the living, dining, and kitchen areas.
