Default Volume Control wiring

My house was wired for sound during construction and before I bought it. The wiring was run in a loop so the volume controls will all be daisy-chained together.
I will eventually have 12 speakers in the loop.
I know this is not ideal.
My question is, what setting do I put the volume control on to make sure I don't hurt the receiver?
Does this matter if I use an amplifier?
Any suggestions on the brand of volume control I should use?
