Default trying to connect old surround sound to new tv....please help

I've had a Yamaha HTR5240 receiver for about 10 years (?) which has been connected to one of the original Sony HD TV's. Both are pre HDMI era....everything connected with component cables. I finally just upgraded this TV to a Samsung 51" that has two HDMI connections and 5 component cable connections....yellow video, blue and red component AV in and a L&R audio. I've spent a couple hours trying to figure out to connect but now not even sure if I can still use this receiver. I've upgraded the speakers over the years and it's been a super system. Advice needed on how to proceed......thanks much.

I would suggest getting an optical to stereo rca converter like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/D3-Digital-Con...udio+converter

It comes with an optical cable to plug into your TV's optical audio output then use stereo patch cable to input to your receiver.

Then hook up all your sources like the cable box, dvd player, etc to the TV. Whatever source is selected by your TV will send the audio to the receiver.

Thanks for help. Are "stereo patch cables" the same as component cables? Also, since the converter costs $30, and I don't mind spending the money, would it make sense to upgrade to a newer receiver that uses hdmi like the Yamaha RX-V375?

A new receiver would be better, of course. The stereo connection will only allow you to use prologic surround, whereas the new receiver will allow full 5.1 digital surround. As to the economics of worth vs cost, I'll leave that up to you.

If the samsung tv is 2012 or newer, another option that might work for you is the samsung shape link mate. Look for it under audio at samsung; but, found it cheaper through a different site online
