Default Desperate for help regarding surround sound and blu-ray set up

Hi all, brand new to this forum and in need of some help and advise if possible please

I bought a brand new 3D TV a few months back and currently have a samsung DVD player with 5.1 surround sound speakers.

I have a tivo box and to enable me to have surround sound through the TV when watching from the Tivo box it is connected via the DVD through optical cable.

I want to upgrade to a blu ray player and am trying to figure the best way to go about it in terms of still having surround sound.

So, these are the options that are in my head:

1. Can I simply just buy a blu ray that is 5.1 capable and use my current speakers as they are really good?? (although having googled like mad it seems unlikely that I am going to be able to do this)??

2. Buy a decent blu ray player and also buy a decent amplifier and simply connect the surround sound to that and then connect the amp to my TV so that surround sound can be used through blu ray or my tivo box?

Hoping someone can help

Best results would include a new Bluray player and a decent AVR but first verify and confirm speaker ohm rating and wattage capacity post budget and someone will help in putting together some candidates.
Usually speakers in a system package are not the highest quality and often are 4 ohm or some other ohm variance.

Thanks for the reply - I will have a scout around and will also check the capacity of the speakers I have got and will come back after that ;o)

If your sound system has another digital input, you can use it for the Blu-ray player. If not, you can get an optical switch to share the input with your TiVo.
