Surround Sound Players Question?

If you buy a surround sound system that comes with a bluray or dvd player do you have to use it? I already have a bluray player I don't need another one it's weird that almost every surround sound comes with one. I thought you needed a receiver so how does that work? And I only have one audio out port on my bluray which is an "optical digital out"

As an example: Sony BRAVIA DAV-DZ170 Home Theater System

Most systems with built in Blu-ray players don't have very many inputs for other devices. So, while you don't have to use the built in player, why not do so?

There are lots of HTIBs that don't have players - just a receiver and speakers.

Would I be able to plug this into my bluray?? Meaning are they compatible?

Onkyo HT-S3500 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker/Receiver Package

Yes, and that's a fine system!

Oh, and you don't plug the surround system into the Blu Ray, you plug everything into the receiver and one HDMI cable to the TV. Depending on your TV, you may need an optical cable from the TV back to the receiver if you want to have antenna TV in surround sound.
