Another good source for reasonably priced speaker options is partsexpress.com. Get their full coverage catalog which shows what they offer and has a lot of other great items for a sound system as well. I would choose some fairly good speakers (including a subwoofer) and pair them up with a low cost DVR which has Audacity as a feature. Audacity allows the DVR to compensate for speaker/room characteristics by analyzing sound from the listening position. Denon offers some good AVRs for the price (e.g., Denon 1312). For a small room, AVR power output is not that important and one of the smaller AVRs should work fine plus allow for expansion to include DVD/BD players, a TV, and other sound sources you might acquire in the future.

Addenda: Just noted through another forum that Amazon is having a sale on selected Denon AVRs right now (presumably for the SB). You might check their site to see if there's one to fit your needs.
