Default surround sound with streaming sevices

I just bought a Samsung 6300 HDTV. I have Direct TV and an older Sony Surround system-model k740p(HT-DDW740) that has no HDMI inputs. I have connected the HDMI on the Direct TV receiver to the TV and the DigitalOptical on the surround sound to the Direct receiver. Great-but if I use the smart tv to connect to Netflix, I can only use the tv audio. If I connect the digital optical from the surround sound system to the tv, I only get "PCM" sound. Any suggestions on how I can get 5.1 Dolby Digital when streaming? Any help is appreciated:-)

Optical from the sat box to the Sony-if no results then it's on NF.
Net Flix suks anyway. So does roku. In fact roku is worse charging you and stuffing commercials down your throat. I sat and watched a show and endured the same commercial over and over. Sent the roku back.
PS: PCM is digital audio.

I take it that you're coming out of the TV "audio-out" with the optical that goes to your Sony?

You're stuck with whatever format your TV can deliver. You may have other options through your TV menu but PCM is probably the only one available. Your Sony AVR might need a menu adjustment to accept a PCM signal since a lot of audio is transfered in bitstream.

Your AVR must have the capability to decode this and it may or may not be 5.1 depending on the TV and the source. (See this article for more information on audio-out capabilities of TVs:

Thanks for the replies-but much of it is Greek to me:-) How do I adjust the Sony Surround Sound system to accept the PCM signal? I'm sure my new TV can handle surround sound, so the problem has to be something in the receiver, when I have the Digital Optical connected through the Direct Tv receiver, it's fine, but if I connect it from the TV to the Surround system, that's when I get the PCM message on the receiver. Frustrating!

Not all TV's can pass 5.1 through their audio out, except sound from their own built in tuner.

Oh, and Roku doesn't suck because one channel plays commercials, there are hundreds of channels to pick from.

Unhappy

I looked at my user manual, and it does say that my TV has the capability to transmit Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. I connected the digital out on my tv to the digital optical input on my surround system-still no go. UGH!

My ROKU used to be so-so but after going from 1.5 Mbps to a sustainable 18Mbps it is much better as decent streaming speeds without buffering can be achieved and also HD viewing is available. I agree though - we have dozens of channels that are free as well as a netflix sub - some have commercials (i.e. crackle) and some don't but overall for the $50 I paid a year ago I love it.
