Default TV Sound connected to play through Surround Sound Speakers

How can I connect my TV to my surround system to get television audio to play through surround speakers?

You might have a couple of options. If your TV has a backside "TV audio output" or "audio out", you can run from that to your surround sound system (assuming you have an AVR which feeds your surround speakers). Some TVs don't have this feature in which case that's off the table. You could also come from the TV set headphone output but that's a really tacky way to do it. In either case, chances are, you won't get the best surround sound possible since the TV mixes the 5.1 channels down to 2. There are a few newer sets which provide a digital audio output which preserves 5.1 information, but you would need to run that type of output to a digital input on your AVR (using TOSLINK).
