Default tv through surround sound

I just got rid of our cable box/dvr. Still have cable but hooked directly to tv. We just have tv speaker sound that comes out. What kind of cable do I need to have the tv come through the receiver? Is it the optical cable that you hook to the av4 on my yamaha rx-v367 then other end of cable to optical port on tv?

Yes, optical from the TV output to any unused input on the AVR.

There is no flat panel TV (that I know of) that sends anything better than 2-channel sound into its audio-out, except what surround sound it receives through its own tuner. So if your cable is going to the TV's tuner you'll be OK. If it goes to any other input, you won't get 5.1 out of the optical out.

Increasing numbers of TVs output DD 5.1 from attached devices. A few even do DTS. But, that's not an issue in this thread since the OP says he does not have a set-top box and is using his TV's tuner.
