Default Recommendations for Surround Sound Placement

Hello everyone,

I'm hoping I can get some help setting up surround sound in my new home. I have attached a picture of the area in question. I have a 47" TV that will be mounted right above the fireplace. The builders recommended installing the speaker wires in the ceiling, but after reading around it seems that would not be the best setup for surround sound. I was just hoping I could get some recommendations from some of you to determine where I should have my front 3 speakers. Thank you for any help/suggestions.

Center channel right under the TV. Centered, of course. L&R,,to the left and right of the TV. It's your rears that you should be concerned with. Will your seating be 6' to 8' in front of the tv or off to the side?

The seating will be about 6' directly in front of the TV. I'm thinking that I will need to mount the rear speakers on the ceiling behind the seating area. I guess my biggest concern is the left and right speakers. I don't think I have enough room directly to the left and right of the TV to mount them on the wall. I thought if I mounted my TV low enough maybe I could mount the speakers a bit above the TV and to the left and right.

Do you have speakers yet?

No speakers yet, still waiting for my house to be built. Part of the build process will involve them setting up the wires for surround sound which is why I'm looking for placement ideas.

What type of budget do you have planned for your surround? One other thing to keep in mind is where your components are going to sit. You would have plenty of room to the l/r of the tv, under the windows for speakers. For better WAF, rear surrounds, and overhead speakers placed in the ceiling would be ideal since you are in the building mode.

I'm looking to try and stay around $1500. I'm assuming that WAF means Wife Approval Factor. She is the one that wants me to have the speakers mounted on the ceiling, but I've been told that the sound quality won't be as good with them on the ceiling. I've also heard that in-ceiling speakers sound even worse.

Klipsch, Definitive Technologies, B&W, to name a few, all make great in wall speakers that you would be impressed with. Klipsch would be more in line with your budget. Since you are in the building mode, I would consider a set of Klipsch front l/c/r standard speakers and the Klipsch in ceiling for rear surrounds. They are directional so you can tweak their focus. One other important thing to keep in mind is that with DD PLIIz, you might want to have another set of in ceiling speakers mounted in the ceiling in the front of your seating. DD PLIIz is what the consider the "height" codec - it basically fills in the sound for effects such as rain, a helicoptor, a bullet whizzing past you.
Bottom line, for you to really enjoy your sound, keep the wife happy - in wall or in ceiling speakers, as long as you spend a few extra bucks are worth the money. Not to mention add resale value to your home,
