Default Surround sound system set up question

Hi, this is my first post but I could not find answers anywhere on the web.

I have kind of a strange set up, I am using two 2.1 systems from altec and cyber acoustics and a pair of bose companions set behind my sitting area to complete surround sound... it seems to work rather well, but I have a total of six sattelites and two subwoofers, and my realtek audio settings only shows 5 sattelites and one sub, and is 5.1

Do i have more than 5.1? is there a better way to utilize my speakers if I am not getting all the sound i can out of realtek? or is it a bad idea in general to try to hook up multiple speakers to a computer to make surround at all? lol

I am not an audiophile, however I do believe it comes down to the receiver that is decoding the source file and how you have the speakers set up through the receiver. If it is a 5.1 Dolby source DVD and the audio is being decoded by a 5.1 receiver, the best you can get is a 5.1 product. I would think if you have 2 2.1 systems, you would get 2.1 twice.

What he said. Plus, can the bose! Once you get into a good blu ray like (John Carter) and the audio blows you away you will know you have the correct setup.
Speakers should all be from the same maker, as they are "tone balanced" that is needed for a seamless sound stage, across the channels. The transition should be smooth and even. bose are, well, crap! You will get supporting comments from other members who KNOW better.
Do your self a favor, invest in a small system, stay away from HTIB.

Guys - the OP is using a computer with computer speakers not A HTIB or AVR + Speakers - he is going to be limited by what is self powered and pc compatible as well as the limitations of his audio/sound card manager.
