Default HELP me with sound on TV

I have a 40" philips hdtv, and I love it. However the sound quality is not up to my standard. The problem is the sound effects out weigh the actors voices and is drowned out. I like when the voices outweight the background. Shoud I turn sound effects off, sound I turn the dolby digital off. I also have the sound equalizer with 120hz, 500hz, 1.5khz, 5kHz, and 10kHz what levels should I put these ???

If that is occuring, shut off effects, and re: the EQ, a boost @ 1.5 -5khz will increase voices. I do however suggest a sound bar, or small avr with min. 5.1 speakers
