Default Surround sound with streaming media

Hi

I have a WD streaming media device, and a Sony amp (str-de698) which is 150w x 7. The WD has an HMDI output, an AV out and an optical out.

My TV is an older TV and there is no built in option for surround sound on the back (that is, there is only an L & R output). There is HDMI (which is how the WD connects to the TV).

For this example, we can assume I have a music DVD of a live concert which I've ripped to an ISO and is being streamed to my streaming media device from my NAS drive. There is an option to play the file as 5.1 and according to my research, 5.1 is possible via streaming.

Q1) However, I assume I can only have 2.1 set up due to my set up(L & R + sub). Please correct if me I'm wrong. Can I use the WD streaming digital out for this (as the amp has digital in)?

Q2) Assuming I can only have 2.1 set up, is this route correct: From Media device into TV. From TV into amp. From amp into speakers. Or is it (somehow) from Media device - video into TV and sound into amp (and then amp to speakers).

Q3) What would I need to change to allow a 5.1 surround sound.

Q4) And lastly, can I get this set up to use wireless (rear speakers wireless)?

Thank you for taking the time.

Yes you should be able to. It will output it as 2 channel stereo which is fine with you current setup.. Since it appears your Sony receiver does not have HDMI, just connect the optical from the WD to 1 of the optical inputs on the Sony receiver.

Q2) Assuming I can only have 2.1 set up, is this route correct: From Media device into TV. From TV into amp. From amp into speakers. Or is it (somehow) from Media device - video into TV and sound into amp (and then amp to speakers).

You can connect it to the TV using analog L/R cables and then out put analog L/R to the receiver. But I would input directly via optical from the WD to the receiver like I explained in Q1. If you plan to remain at 2.1 it does not really matter. But if you plan to go 5.1 (Q4), I would definately go with optical.

Q3) What would I need to change to allow a 5.1 surround sound.

All you need to do is add a center speaker and a pair of souround speakers.. What speakers do you have now?

Q4) And lastly, can I get this set up to use wireless (rear speakers wireless)?

Yes , there are wireless speaker options but they can be pricey and not as good sound quality wise as wired speakers. IMO, you are better off getting a set of wired surround and a center speaker that compliment your current speakers if at all possible.
Thank you for taking the time.
Party On..
