Default Dual receiver setup for multiple rooms

I'm About to buy either the Denon avr-1713 or avr-1613.
I'm 5.1 in the living room but have two other areas of the house with speakers(those areas are stereo only).
normally the other rooms would only play music of some sort but I would like the ability to at least play the video fed audio on the back porch for when I have buds over and we watch the game outdoors. (I'm trying to utilize my old, still working, sony receiver and save money).
Check my theory and let me know if I'm off base.
The 1713 has a zone 2 but it's not powered. Could I run the stereo cables from it to my old sony to power the other rooms? The old reciever has speakers A and B so I could hook the two rooms up to each speaker set.
essentially all video connections would go to new receiver and if I wanted sound(either same as indoor livingroom or something else) I would turn on old stereo and feed input from new receiver to old.

Did I confuse you?

As a follow up I downloaded the instructions to the 1713 and it has the following note.

It is not possible to play the digital audio signals input from the HDMI, Coaxial or optical connectors in ZONE2. Use analog connections for Zone2 Playback.

If I understand this correctly then to get the audio from a video feed(say live TV) I would need to connect the DirecTV receiver through HDMI to the new Denon and also connect another audio cable from the directv receiver to the old Sony.

Correct - that is the way the vast majority (if not all) of zone 2/3 work - analog inputs only. As you surmised this means adding separate audio lines.

I have somewhat the same situation. My Media room and game room are adjacent and open to each other. I have 7.1 speakers built in the ceiling (3 pairs) plus front a center actual speaker and sub woofer. Then there are 2 pairs of speakers built into the game room ceiling. All the speaker cables come out of the wall in one spot at the surround reciever location.

I have a time warner digital/HD box and run out HDMI to TV HDMI in. I run a optical cable out the tv to the surround(no HDMI older 7.1 surround reciever) I want sound to go to the other 4 speakers for games and time warner music stations. To accomplish that I run 2 RCA cables from the analog audio outs on the TW cable box to the Integrated stereo amp which has 2 channel stereo out to the 4 speakers in the game room.

Problem, the sound I get in the game room is delayed slightly and is noticeable.

So, what would be the reason for delay? Is it the analog outputs on the TW box? or??? This happens for games and TW music channels.
