Default 7.1 Speakers / AMP - Help please - NEWBIE alert!!

Hi All,

Newbie here, apologises if this is a same old same old thread!

Hoping some of you may have some advice,

Back story,

- I'm currently ripping out the lounge no ceailing / floor, plasterboarding and running AV cables, I've just picked up a Epson TW6000 projector for 1080p / 3D HD projection, coupled with a 92" 16:9 matt white screen.

My sound system is letting me down, though I may not be able to afford to change now I'm running decent speaker cables and was thinking, current system is a 6 / 7 year old DTS / 5.1 amp with speakers, so the usual 4 + centre + subwoofer. I'm using Sony PS3 and OSUS HD2 media player for HD output and Sky HD box, GB lan in place, media server with 7TB of space on the lan. Infared sender for controlling up to 6 devices in a cupboard etc..

Given I don't want to rip things out again I was going to add a cable to the centre rear ready and waiting for the amp / speakers, questions below which hopefully you can help on

1. Would I be right to only add that extra cable for 7.1 or is there a better surround system on blu-rays I need to be aware of ?
2. I've read all the comments regarding speakers and know BOSE (dare I mention the word in the post ?!!) are silly over pricied and low build quaility, so question is, what is a good entry level set of speakers for around the 200 - 400 mark (tight budget)!!!
3. Looking for a new AMP which will support 7.1 and again be budget concise, want to update what I have and improve the overall experience could you suggest anything ?

Ideally actual models / links would be helpful as I've got very little idea when it comes to the specifics of who / what etc..

Budget is low but I'm sure I can improve on what I have OR you may suggest sticking with things and increasing budget, either way any help would be very greatly appreacited!!!

Thank you,

Couple of things -
1) to go to 7.1 you would need to add 2 speaker wires not just 1 for speakers number 6 & 7. Each will require it's own wire.
2) I ssume you are in the Uk but could you give us your budget converted to approximate $US currency. We may be able to make some reccomendations but you will need to see if you can get them to fit your electrical / display system as I believe you are on 50hz and not 60 cycles overseas and not sure how pal vs ATSC may fit in. (probably doesn't for audio but for the video passthrough I am not really sure but most people here will suggest an Onkyo all in one HTS that comes with separate speakers and an AVR - you would need to find the corresponding UK model - there are several models running from ~$350-$1000+ US dollars

Hi, yes UK based, works out around $315 - $630 dollars for 200 - 400 budget

Fuzzy on the 7.1, currently I plan to have centre speaker wire, left and right front wire, rear left and right wires and rear centre wire, cable for Subwoofer which will be at the front, what is the other one ?

Like the look of the Onkyo TX-803S Amplifier silver

Works out around $470, could probally budget around the same for speakers, so if we work on $500 for amp and $500 for the speakers I think that would be realistic to what I can afford

Thoughts on speakers ?

The set-up for 7.1 is front left, front right, center, left and right surround channels (often mistakenly called the 'rears' ) and left and right rear channels (not rear center - both left and right rear) and a subwoofer. What you described would be 6.1.
Also the onkyo systems I spoke of include all the speakers and a amplifier/receiver in a combo package - everything you need 7 speakers, 1 subwoofer, and a AVR.

Hi again, struggling to find the actual UK package, the ones I can find are all 5.1 systems, HT-S6505 comes with 2 front and centre and 2 rear left and right, no central surround speakers, can't work out if the AMP supports the two central side channels you mention and if so how I'd get the two matching speakers ?!

Where you are confused is with the surrounds - in all surround set-ups fronts and center are the same
5.1 adds two side surrounds also known as surrounds- people mistakenly call these 'rears' but they are not.
7.1 adds 2 REAR channels in addition to the two side surrounds.

I would start here http://www.uk.onkyo.com/en/packages-312.html and contact onkyo - these are all 5.1 packages but I believe you could add the 2 rears separate (the receivers should be 7.1 capable - check with Onkyo cust service to be sure)

Ok found HT-S9405THX, I'm really liking the look works out at 899 UK price so $1407 !

Only comes with 5.1 speakers (thanks for the points above, my bad :-) )

Would I need to get matched speakers for the rears (hope I've got that right!!), the ones it comes with are THX certified etc..

Also with surround speaker placement, I have a three seat sofa against a wall (backs to the wall) and then cinema screen is 3.5 meters away, limited by a doorway to the right and patio doors to the left, would the surrounds be next to either side of the sofa and the rears at the back closer togther ? Some sites say ear level for rear and surrounds others say 3 feet above the listners ear level ? Front left and right and centre ear level (no issue based on room design)

The surround speakers that match the onews included in that set-up are
model skr-980
here is a link to the spec sheet for that system to include all specs and ratings along with a front and rear view
http://www.eu.onkyo.com/downloads/1/...tasheet_EN.pdf

note: even though it comes with a 5.1 speaker system the AVR (receiver) does indeed support the extra 2 speakers to make it 7.1 and is streaming compatible for hooking it up to a home network or internet music streaming.

For an entry into home thater if that is in you budget you should be quite pleased. If you order it please help out the next person and post your impressions or if you need any set-up help just ask. As far as positioning of the sides - most people I know prefer ear level or just a bit higher but room conditions often dictate speaker placement (often less than ideal) but this unit as most newer ones has the Audyssey set-up program where after you are all set up you place an included microphone at several listening positions in your room and it plays test notes from each of the speakers and adjusts the eq and volume to best fit the soundfield in your room. Also for a while Onkyo had gotten away from Burr-brown DAC in some of there models for less expensive cirrus logic ones - this unit has the higher quality burr-brown DAC as well as traditional vga analog computer if you want to hook up a pc to your tv and don't have HDMI inputs.

Try e-mailing Onkyo directly and asking them if they have a solution or vendor you could go to - My Avr is an Onkyo and they have been very responsive to my posts in the past.
