Default Is this a good center channel?

The reason I am looking at this one is due to its slim design (only 4.8" high). I am somewhat limited on where I can place my center channel. The only place I see I can put it is at the bottom of my Samsung 64" plasma sitting directly on top of the base. I only have about ~4.75" between the top of the base and the bottom of the picture screen before I start blocking the picture. THis one looks like it will fit without obstructing the view.

I plan to pair it with the KEF IQ10's http://www.accessories4less.com/make...ck-pair/1.html

Are there any better alternatives out there in the same price range with a "slim" center channel that will fit my needs?

How about we first establish some standards and explanations as to what a center channel speaker is, does and it's importance.

The center channel speaker is the single most important speaker in the entire surround sound array. No other speaker or combination of speakers has as much impact be it positive or negative. Something to remember in the future as you grow, upgrade, etc.

All other speakers rely and depend on the center channel as it is the director of a surround soundfield. It produces just about 100% of the dialog, up to 80% of all the other sounds emanating from the front sound stage. With this being the case, there are inter dependencies that play an important role.

The center channel speaker should be matched to the right and left front speakers in timbre and tone which means they should be of the same brand and in some cases an identical model or at least one that is designed to match the fronts. If this is not the case problems will occur such as a static, not smooth transition from the right to center to left speakers (front soundfield) and that sounds quite bad. Also dialog will become garbled and unintelligible which makes you have to increase the volume to a point where it is too loud but the dialog is still muddied.

Hope I didn't bore you with this but it is very important to remember when selecting front speakers, in particular the center channel.

Now to answer your question. In your situation I would recommend nothing less that another KEF, just like the left and right speaker or something KEF offers that would be a matching center channel. Nothing else will deliver the proper soundfield. That is of course unless you select another brand or model that has a matching center channel speaker.

Hope this helps you in your selection for great audio performance.
