No sound out from TV

I have a Sony Bravia TV and just puchased a bose Cinemate sound system. When i connected everything up I am getting sound only from the TV to the 'surround sound'. I have talked to Sony and Bose and apparantly that is a limitation of the TV. Sound is not passed from digital inputs (Blu ray and Roku conneted to the TV via HDMI) to the optical sound out. I am looking for any way to get around this before returning my new sound system.

If i connect the components via RCA cables to the TV I can get sound out but get a lousy picture and I am guessing not the best sound.
