Default Question--Samsung or JVC?

This is my first post on the forum and I hope that someone can help me out.

I've narrowed my search for a HDTV to either the Samsung HL-P5063W or the JVC HD52Z575. I've read positive and negative things about both sets and I'm looking for some experienced opinions on which one to go with.

Mainly, I'm wondering which is the better technology, the D-ILA from JVC, or Samsung's DLP. Also, since I won't be hooking up a home theatre system to the set at this time, which one has the better sound quality?

This is a great forum and I've learned a lot from reading posts. Thanks in advance for your help.

My suggestion is to find someplace that has both sets and go with whichever one LOOKS the best to you.

I like the picture of the JVC better, but that's not to say that I dislike the sammy. Decide what kind of connections you want/need, and that may help you narrow it down too.

Good Luck deciding!

My personal experience is that JVC products are among the least reliable out there. They are usually on the bleeding edge of technology and they know how to market their products, but I have simply had too many that have failed to meet my expectations over the long-haul. I have owned a JVC stereo, VCR, and digital video camera...and had major problems with each. Based on that alone, I sure wouldn't plop almost $3K into one of their TVs. Heck, I have had problems with Samsung stuff too, but they seem to be improving.

I've had three sets of the JVC DILA and while I think it has the best picture, I had to return all three sets due to smudge marks on the screen. All RPTV's use the same screen technology and they all come from the same limited number of suppliers, so any set by any manufacturer can have a bad run of screens. If you read further back on these posts you will learn about this exact problem which is discussed in detail with pictures and explanations. BTW, Samsung has had the most problems with these smudge marks, more than any other manufacturer but, that may be because they make more TV's. Having said that, I would again buy the JVC which was perfect except for this one problem. Also, the reason I had 3 bad sets in a row was because, due to store policy I had to go through the same store and recieved 3 sets with almost identical lot numbers which came off the same shipment, so of course they had the same defect. JVC was dilgent in service and wanted to send a tech over immediately to get to the bottom of this problem...but the store got sick of me and gave me my money back. I have checked other stores and no one has had this problem with the DILA.
p.s. the sound on the JVC is just as lousy as all the other sets. even a $300. complete 5.1 HT system will give you reasonably good sound.

I have the JVC HD52Z575. When I bought it, BB didn't have any in stock so I had to wait a week to get it. Since I bought it on Friday and the Superbowl was Sunday, they let me take one of the display Samsung DLP's home. This was great because these were the 2 sets I was debating about at the time. After a day or 2 my wife wanted to keep the Samsung, but I talked her out of it. Once it arrived and I turned it on, she shut right up. The picture is great on the D-ILA in both HD and DVD. However the Samsung had better SD. This isn't that big of a deal though, as I don't watch too much SD anymore...unless, of course, I'm watching ESPNHD. But that's another thread.
So, I'd go with the JVC but I liked the Samsung as well. If you're going to watch a lot of SD or have a wife who does (like me) then you might want to go with the Samsung. If you're going to be watching mostly HD (which you probably will) and want the wow factor, go with the JVC.
In regards to the sound quality, I didn't listen to the Samsung without my HT. One more thing...the Samsung had both DVI and HDMI connectivity. This might be something to consider if you're using more than one device with HD inputs. Or you could just use component for one and HDMI for another as you would have to with the JVC.

Default I'd Opt for HD-ILA

I understand the hard choice to be made between the Samsung and the JVC, since those were my finalists. While I like some features of the Samsung better, in the end I made the choice based on the HD picture. After all, isn't that why you're going HD in the first place? In my view, the JVC HD-ILA (I've got the HD-61Z575) boasts the better picture, by far.
