Default Am I really getting 480p?

I just purchased a Sony KDF-E50A10 this weekend and I have everything setup on it the way I like except one thing. I'm not sure I have it set to display 480p. I have a Panasonic DVD-F65K 5-disc progressive player hooked up with component cables. I have the progressive setting on the DVD player set to "enable".

When I play a DVD and press display on the TV's remote control it shows 480i on the screen. Have I forgotten to do something?

The 480i shown on the screen indicates that that TV is receiving a 480i signal from the DVD player. By default your progressive scan player outputs 480i from its component video terminals, even if you have "enabled" progressive scan. You need to perform a second step to get the player to actually output 480p.

The second step is as follows: While viewing a DVD, pop up your player's "Play" menu and find the scan-type entry. Then change the 480i to 480p. If you are not familiar with your player's "Play" menu, consult the manual.

My pleasure.

While I don't have the same DVD player that you have, I do have a single-disc Panasonic of the same vintage as your 5-disc player, connected to a Sony HDTV. The Play menu offers a lot of options that you can try out and see the results immediately while you are watching a DVD. With the right combination of options your should be able to get a super picture with that player and your Sony TV. Enjoy!
