I guess I should be thankful my 5078 is still up and running with no problems. I am lazy and have not checked. Is he Sammy DLP bulb "the same" as the Tosh? Thanks.

Default sitting in the dark

I purchased the 46" cinema series toshiba dlp six months ago. What a big mistake.
I have had other Toshiba products and had great success with them.
After reading about dlps I decided on the Toshiba. It took me about a year to buy one. After multiple trips to the surrounding area Future Shops and asking a multitude of sales reps on the quailty and feedback from other customers who have purchased the tvs, I was assured that this tv and brand was great, I made the jump. My bulp went just after about 400 hrs. If I would have known that the bulb failure rate was this high I would not have bought dlp. What really bothers me is that I am sure that Future Shop with all the tvs it sells would know if the sets were good or not. I now realize that my first mistake was buying at Future Shop as they don't support the customer and are only interested in the sale..
I talked to a reporter from the CBC french marketplace tv show who is doing a peice and he told me many horror stories on the Toshiba dlps and that Future Shop won't help its customers and has discontinued selling Toshiba dlps.
I would love to see a class action law suite against Toshiba. Point me the right direction and I'll sign up.

Default 46hm95 and 50hm66

I own both the above units and had Toshiba replace under warranty the lamp in the 50hm66. Since then, it has performed perfectly.

My 46hmn95 came with a two year warranty on the lamp because of the problems with earlier units.

After 13 months using the set, I called to have the replacement lamp sent to me that was under warranty.

With two days, it arrived.

We are very pleased with the service department and how we where treated.

The 50hm66 had the "shadow problem" and was repaired with a new part within 5 days. It had to be ordered.

Problems come up with All electronics and on sites as this (which are very helpful), one only learns of the problems.

Yeah this kind of thing sucks. I purchased a 720p Samsung DLP less than 3 years ago. In my case, the bulb lasted a long time. However, about 2 months ago, the bulb replacement LED started to blink and my picture when out. I ordered a new bulb at $170, and tried it, but the TV still would not display the picture.

I took the set in, and it turns out that the ballast and color wheel needed to be replaced, or as they call it "the light engine". This is a $700 repair, which includes a new bulb. A working but used HLN507w is only worth about $500. I didn't even bother fixing it. But as you can imagine, I was pretty pissed that I paid $3000 for a TV that didn't even last 3 years. I neglected to opt in for a warranty when I bought it at Tweeter, so I was screwed.

That didn't stop me from purchasing another Sammy as a replacement though. The PQ was always awesome on the old one, but this time I protected myself with a good warranty. It's funny that my new 61" 1080p with HDMI inputs was about $500 less than that old 50" 720p with nothing but one DVI input.
