Default Android Based Media players

I have seen more and more of these 50 -100 dollar android media players popping up.

Has any one had any experience with them?

Is there a model anyone can recommend?

Hi to everyone. I am new to this forum (I cannot find an introduction thread). I like to play games and I am more interested in TVs and media players. I would like to share and gain some knowledge from this forum. Hope I will enjoy my stay.
With Android based Media players you can convert your TV into an android display unit. Download apps from market, play games, network online and so on. But most of the android based players still need better software, hardware implementation and upgrade support. Also none of the android media players yet support gyroscope remote which is essential for enjoying android based apps else it becomes very cumbersome to manage with mouse and keyboard. I own an android based media player called Measy, though I have not used it in a while. I would advise you to stay away from android based media players for some time until it becomes a lot better like the new android phones or tablets.

Personally, I would avoid the "Android TV" boxes, and stick with Google TV. The Vizio Co-Star is a Google TV although it is a stripped down version compared to the Sony model. Whether or not you want Google TV or a different media player probably depends on what you need. I have 3 Google TV boxes in the house and love them for internet streaming but I don't have much in the way of local files to access.

What? Nearly ALL Google TV devices are Android!!

I have a Revue w/Google TV-- I also stream all sorts of content from the WEB and my server-- it's all Android.

Like Google and Android don't go together . . .

All Google TV boxes run Android, the "Android TV" boxes are not Google TV, don't have the same UI and little or no chance the company selling the box can support it adequately. I also don't know which Google TV apps will run or can even be installed on the "Android TV" boxes. As far as I know there are no official "Android TV" box applications or any official Google acknowledgement of the product.

Basically "Android TV" as I linked below is just a tablet computer with HDMI output rather than a screen. Unlike Google TV, there is no HDMI input on any I have ever seen. There may be hundreds of different boxes from Asian companies sold as "Android TV", none of which I would buy.

Here is an Android TV box on eBay:

Here is another Android TV box on eBay:

Here is a real Google TV box:

So, what you're saying is . . . that if it doesn't say Sony, it is not real . . . ?

Wow, are you deliberately doing this? There are products called Google TV, Logitech, Sony, Vizio, and LG have released these products. The Asian Android TV products are not Google TV, don't have the software or hardware to be qualified to carry the product name although the ads for the products will indicate Google Android or Android TV or something intended to confuse the market.

Nothing I have stated is very complicated but you seem to be trying to make it appear to be complicated. I linked some examples trying to make the simple concept even simpler to help but apparently even that didn't work.

Even the ad for the second link I provided acknowledges the issue trying to make the "Android TV" boxes work.

Quote:
DON'T TAKE THE RISK BUYING ANDROID BOXES FROM CHINA!

Not only does it take a long time to receive, most China TV boxes are LOW QUALITY and apps DON'T WORK!
Purchase a TV box that actually WORKS! Our G-Box software was designed in the USA with US services in mind!
Who are these companies, how do you get software updates to fix bugs? What applications will run on these boxes? I wouldn't buy the G-Box either but at least it points out potential issues with the product class as a whole. I can't imagine any of these boxes will even be allowed to install the Google Play Store Google TV applications so if the apps can be installed, it will require some sort of hack and probably won't work properly if at all.

Just because they run an Android version doesn't mean there will be much if anything of value that can be done with the box, particularly in the US. Google TV is having a hard time gaining traction in the market and one of the reasons is the confusion those boxes are causing. Who knows how many people have purchased one thinking it was going to be able to run the official Google TV software and optimized apps designed for Google TV.
