Default Need help getting more HD...

I got a new RCA HD61W66 (great tv in my opinion), and only recieve 5 HD/DTV stations at the moment. (5.1 and 5.3 are PBS, and I get 11.1, 11.2 (weather plus), and 11.3 (The Tube).

The antenna I have at the moment is a RCA ANT110.

Here is the information relating to my location:

ZIP code: 79336
Town: Levelland
State: Texas
Local stations location: Lubbock

Available analog channels and signal quality in percant: (signal quality are estimates)

05 [PBS] 20%
11 [NBC] 99%
13 [CBS] 85%
14 [UPN/My Lubbock TV] 60%
22 [WB/CW] 65%
28 [ABC] 90%
32 [FOX Weather] 60%
34 [FOX] 90-99%

Available Digital channels:

5.1 PBS Digital [100% reception exept when large semi-trucks drive by]
5.2 PBS Unknown [Blank channel, I don't know what this is used for]
5.3 PBS HDTV [100% Reception, same reception issue with 5.1]
11.1 NBC HD/SD [100% Reception, however the antenna has to be in a narrow location for this channel to come in]
11.2 NBC WeatherPlus [Same reception as 11.1]
11.3 The Tube [Same reception as 11.1 and 11.2]

13.1 CBS HD/SD [No reception]

28.1 ABC HD/SD [No reception]

32.1 FOX Weather SD [No reception]

34.1 FOX HD/SD [No reception]

Here is a diagram showing the location of the antenna and its possition (front of antenna facing West):

(all stations are located in Lubbock, which are 25-30 miles EAST of me)
I get all the analog locals in pretty good (channel 13 and channel 11 come in the best).

But I cannot get anything beyond 11.3.

What is wierd, that I used to have a crappy home made antenna (only 6 inches long) that I was able to pick up PBS on!

Now I have a RCA antenna and it managed to pick up my NBC station. But I cannot get any other channels to come in. I am also using a splitter so that I can use the antenna on both Analog and HD)

The left ant pole is fully extended and the right is has been retracted. (it had no effect on my digital stations, but improved my analog reception alot)

Any advice on how to get any more HD channels with current antenna (I have satalite with locals, so analog locals arn't important, so I plan to ditch the splitter) Currently I do not have the ability to put an antenna on the roof. (mom won't let me)

Oh and it seems the left ant pole does all the work in picking up the HD channels. Since the right pole doesn't effect it as much. (when I retracted the left pole, the 11.1 lost reception)

You need more antenna than what you have, especially for UHF channels, as that RCA antenna has no real UHF receptin to speak of. You have one VHF digital stayion in your market, but a couple of the stations in Lubbock have not yet built out full-power digital stations: if your mother won't let you mount an antenna ON the roof, see if you can mount an antenna like a Channel Master 4228 in your attic. An attic installation isn't ideal, but is should be a BIG improvement over what you have.

KCBD 9 DT LIC LUBBOCK TX US 15. kW

KPTB 25 DT CP MOD LUBBOCK TX US 8.3 kW

KAMC 27 DT CP LUBBOCK TX US 1000kW

KJTV-TV 35 DT CP MOD LUBBOCK TX US 1000. kW

KTXT-TV 39 DT LIC LUBBOCK TX US 890. kW DA

KLBK-TV 40 DT CP LUBBOCK TX US 1000. kW

CP means that the station has a construction permit from the FCC: it may or may not yet be operating

LIC means that the station is licensed and operating

Whats the best indoor antenna that I can get? (one that I can find at Walmart anyway)

I don't usually have alot of money (my mom is money hungry and won't give me much, lol)

So what I can get is limited. I only have one jack going out to the attic which splits off to the satalite dish and the other goes to the bedroom. I can't really put anything in the attic either, since my dad won't let my add any additional cables to the attic or anywhere for that matter. I am pretty much limited to the top of the TV. (highest place available in the living room)

Oh and here is a photo of my TV (tv is off right now, so what your seing is a reflection)

(antenna is currently in best position for analog channels and for the digital channels that I currently recieve)

I consider it a miracle that I can even get NBC in digital/HD.
The antenna I'm using only cost me $7 bucks. (awhile back, I used a 6 inch long homeade antenna that would have to be on top of the fridge to pick up NBC, lol)

I can't really convince my dad to set up an outdoor antenna. Since he thinks the satalite service is fine. (no HD on the satalite, and it would cost to much to upgrade).

Why would he get a $2,500 HDTV only to watch SD programming. Its like buying a new car only to rev the engine in the car garage. (lol good anology is it not?)

Well, I will see if I can convince him to get an outdoor antenna. It seems PBS comes in the best. I don't know why. (the antenna could be practicly in any position and still pick up PBS, wierd since the analog PBS doesn't come in very well)

Hopefully, in few months or more, a few more stations might pop up when their transmitters get more power. (I will do a channel scan once a month to see if any other stations are available)

Once my mom gets the satalite turned back on, I could get more creative with the antenna position. Since right now, I have to position it to allow for the analog channles to come in. (The tv has seperate jacks for the analog and digital tuners)

Oh and my attic could be a good place, since there isn't much metal object in there. (except duct work coming out of the heater/air conditioner) I'm glad I even have an attic. Since my last house didn't even have one.

Update:

I recently managed to pick up my local FOX station in digital/HD. This channel is sensitive to traffic though, since everytime a car drives by (I live next to a highway) it will glitch up. All my digital channels will glitch when a large vehicle (mostly semi-trucks with trailers) passes by. This is mostly because my antenna probably needs a higher location.

Well seing that I was able to get FOX34 getting a better antenna might help.

(also, when I have the antenna in the only position that allows FOX to come in, all my analogs come in near perfact. (except UPN and WB/CW, since I will never get those channels to come in perfact).

Right now I sacroficed my NBC channel, since it won't come in when I have the antenna in the only position (very specific position, since if I move the antenna, it will take like 10 minutes to get the signal back) that allows for FOX.

Anyway, I have my eys on a perticular antenna at Radioshack. (the one tigerbangs mentioned in a different thread.)

My question about that antenaa is, that since it is a UHF antenna, will it recieve any VHF channels? I am kind of worried about that.

Welcome to Lubbock HDWorld!!!

Your HD stations are 5.3 (PBS) 11.1 (NBC) and 34.1 (FOX).

You are getting about what you can expect from rabbit ears. KCBD and KAMC are presently broadcasting at less than 1 kW - forget them for now the don't do HD anyway.

I use a RS U75R, but I am inside the loop at Lubbock and can still get KCBD (frequency ch 9) on it.

I recommend you put up a CM4228, but I haven't found one in Lubbock. It should pick up KCBD because they are full power and the CM4228 is ok in VHF high. Try Solidsignal.com, best price lowest shipping.

About all you will find locally would be a RCA antenna at Home Depot or something from Radio Shack (UHF/VHF combo).

Coming in 2009 KUPT soon to be the WC wiill flash cut to digital on CH 22.

You might look at the Lubbock thread on the AVSForum.

Buy the way, your channel list is a little off - here are the digitals for Lubbock:
CH# -freq - netwk - comments
5.1 - 39.1 - PBS - SD - same as analog ch 5.
5.3 - 39.3 - PBSHD - 1080i
11.1 - 9.1 - NBC - 1080i
11.2 - 9.2 - Weather plus - SD
11.3 - 9.3 - The Tube - SD
13.1 - 40.1 - CBS - SD - very weak
25.1 - 25.1 - TBN - SD - Religious
28.1 - 27.1 - ABC - SD very weak
34.1 - 35.1 - FOX - 720p

NEVER give up on the possibility of an outdoor antenna - in Leveland its needed,
34.2 - 35.2 - Fox weather channel SD

Thanks (nice to know someone here lives in my viewing area). I used to live in Lubbock for sometime before moving to Levelland due to high electric bills that we couldn't pay (my mom pretty much ran up the bills for all the electric companys there!)

I can try a roof install, but it will take some convincing for my dad, since he doesn't seem to care for HD. (he fails to see the difference of HD over SD satalite)

I have an eye for detail, so any change in picture quality is noticable to me. I can even spot very slight voice sync problems with certain programs. (PBS HD had one show about glass that had a bad audio/video sync problem)

I only spent $7 for the antenna I'm using now. When I went to buy that antenaa, I saw others that had a nob and things like that. But they fell in the $15-$30 price range, so I couldn't afford them at the time. But perhaps if I get one of those, I might beable to pickup CBS. (currently I can only get a weak signal from FOX during early morning or during the night, when there is little traffic)

Oh and do some stations have a seperate tower for HD? I am wondering, since I can barly pick up the analog PBS channel, but get the digital/HD PBS channel easily. Sad to see that CBS doesn't have HD programming yet.

I'm happy just to pick up NBC, since most of my faverite programs are on that channel. (The Tonight Show, Football, and a few others)
