Default It's a Dipole!

What you have added to the antenna is a dipole antenna for the VHF band. At 16", 36" for the half-wave dipole or a full wavelength would be 72". Looking at a wavelength calculator we get a frequency of about 164 MHz which is just below channel 7, so it will be pretty good for all the VHF stations, at least better than a short antenna which is what UHF antennas would be, the longest is channel 14 at 470 MHz or a full wavelength of about 25 inches or a dipole of about 6.25" per side, very different than your 16 inches!

Very interesting Can you post an up-close picture of your modified antenna? As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words... Thanks!

I was told by a helpful member at AVSForums to cut two 18" coat hanger wires, strip the coating off 1" at each end and bend one end on each and connect it to the balun pointing out horizontally. I have no idea why it worked so well, an engineer could explain it, I am sure, but all I care about is that it works. The PBS signal strength according to each of my 3 TiVoHDs went from 45 to 71 the morning I installed the simple modification and it has stayed the same each morning since. No amplification through a simple antenna splitter on the roof. All other channels stayed the same including the strongest, ABC which remained at 100%. Every channel is between 71 and 100 now.

I am in zip 72212, the antenna is on a house at a very high point for the zip code on the second story roof but not visible from the front of the house or backyard, the instructions from the female of the household. My dream antenna mounted on the peak of the house on a tripod was nixed before getting beyond the planning stages. I much prefer inexpensive in any event so I couldn't be happier.

I know such an inexpensive modified antenna won't be the perfect solution for many but for others with similar antenna needs, it might be as good as it is for me.
You sir, ARE THE MAN!!!

I own this same antenna, and was about to give up. I get everything in the area with it. Over 50 channels. Everything but ABC in Philly, 16 miles away, who is notorious for signal issues. I was about to buy a larger antenna, and then something told me to look for a mod. I can't believe I found this thread.

I did exactly as you said, and everything now comes in perfectly!!

This antenna is in my attic, and feeds an HDHomeRun box. I only paid $15.00 for it at WalMart a few months ago. (the price went up since) I still can't believe I have over 50 channels of TV for $15.00, and lol a COAT-HANGER!! AWESOME!!!

To help others searching....

Eagle Aspen DTV2BUHF low-vhf 2-6 mod

THANKS!!!
