Default which is better...Onkyo TX-SR805 or Denon AVR-2808CI

I think I'm down to two recievers...onkyo sr805 or the denon 2808ci...help please. Both seem to be similar in options, however I want to make sure I am covered with all surround sound formats and want to know if both recievers accept 7.1 channels of pcm. Also I want full HDMI functionality...meaning 1080p pass through as well as hdmi being able to handle audio. If anyone has any information as far as pro or cons on either model as well as problems please let me know...user oppinions are very helpful

thanks

I have the TX-SR805 as well as some other Onkyo models and I can tell you that it is an exceptional performer both on music and 5.1 or 7.1 movie soundtracks. My neighbor has the Denon 2808ci and after comparing it with mine, he took it back today and got the 805. He said he liked the features better, the setup menu was less confusing and it had a couple of things the Denon didn't.

If it's between those two models I'd recommend the Onkyo solid AVR with plenty of features. I was in the same boat as you and after month of researching I decided on the 805 until I listened to the Denon 3808. As for which company puts out more reliable receivers I'd go with Denon. One thing that I did realize when I saw both models was the Onkyo gets crazy hot and I have since learned what that can do to the lifespan of a AVR.

I don't know about yours but the one I saw was really warm after about 30 min of use at the store. Then again it was in a cabinet but who really is not going to place it in one. I have also read from many posts on AVS that heat is indeed a problem. That said if it is down to those two models go with the Onkyo 805 better features for sure just make sure you put a fan in your cabinet(a quiet one).

The 805 seems to be a hit or miss.
The 2808 only has 2 HDMI if that matters.
Try checking out the Yamaha RX-V863

For what reasons? Please give the poster more information than just because you said so.

I've been reading alot about the 805 in the last few weeks and for every 10 happy buyers with no problems there are 10 who have problems enough to return them.
I threw the 863 in for the OP to check out, just another option. You've only read positive things about the 805?

In terms of just sounding good the denon kills the onkyo!.. hands down. Options to me aren't as important as clean solid power and sound, but that is just me.

Where have you read this info?
I have a 705, 805, 875, and a TX-NR905. They are all exceptional receivers and compared to others in the price range, kick butt. That's why my neighbor returned his Denon and replaced it with an Onkyo. More clean sound, features and better layout.

I would be surprised if, for music only, the Onkyo sounded better. AV applications might be different. Denon has always excelled in music reproduction. I would not make the same statement about Onkyo, although it is no slouch.
