And, indeed, that has always been the problem with high quality audio . . .

Very true. I try to hide them, but have never been very good at it. It drives my wife crazy.

Optical Cable can't handle the new audio codecs for 7.1 Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding. You need to use HDMI 1.3 and a new audio receiver.
