Why do people claim BETA had a better picture than VHS?

What's all this, then?...

B1 had a higher tape-to-head speed than VHS which resulted in 260-300 lines of resolution and lower noise in the passband. It was never *dramatically* better than VHS.

It's interesting reading the specs on these machines. Like Audio Noise Reduction (similar to Dolby B). I had no idea my videotape used that..... I thought it was just a straight recording.
Beta I = 40 mm/second
SP = 33.4 mm/second

Here's an interesting link that breaks down the specs for each system:

Beta X2 (B2) halved the tape speed to get two-hours, but degraded the image quality from X1.

To really see the difference, you need to look at early Beta and VHS machines. Over the years, so many improvements were made to both that the best would look about equal now--I heard it expressed that by the end of Beta, the difference in image quality between given Beta and VHS machines could be less than the difference between two Beta machines, even two of the same models from the same manufacturer!
The later Beta VCR's that used a high band BI speed, such as the Sony SL-HF1000, SL-HF750 and SL-HF2100 probably represented the biggest difference compared to VHS HQ. Still I though SVHS was better than those sub formats and EDBeta slightly better than SVHS. None of them are worth using today except to play old tapes really.

I had a SL-HF1000. The PQ of it's fastest speed recording was a tad better than the 8 hour mode on a S-VHS deck.

And no mode of any tape deck even touches what my DVR can do. Frankly, I wasn't even annoyed that my 8300HD DVR had only on "speed" as I only care about "identical to the source feed."

Something was wrong with your SL-HF1000 then. The difference between BI Hi-Band and VHS EP is pretty big, both in theory and practice. I have owned most of the better SuperBeta Hi-Fi VCR's including all I mentioned.
