Default LGHDDVD, Sony Grand Wega, Onkyo SR502 HDMI audio problem

I purchased the LGDVB418 HD because it has the HDMI output. I conntected the HDMI cable to my Sony 55 Grand Wega and received both audio and video of which I was not impressed until I played around with different video settings for about half an hour. I realize the HDMI carries both audio and video but I want the audio to come from my Onkyo TX-SR502 so I can enjoy the 6.1 surround. I have an optical audio cable going from the TV to the receiver. So I figured that using the HDMI cable the audio would go to my TV then from the optical out to my receiver but all I get is video and no audio. The Onkyo says to have the DVD optical audio in Vid1 so I put another optical cable from the DVD out to the receiver in while still using the HDMI for video but still got no audio. I called LG support who in turn told me that my first suspicion should work, that is the HDMI from the LG to the TV then the optical audio from the TV to receiver should work. I also tried the component hook up using the optical out to the receiver and still no audio. LG support told me to return it because the audio is bad on the LG DVD unit. Do you agree with him or is there something in my connection configuration? Does the HDMI cable prevent the signal from going to my receiver? If so I guess I wasted $91.00 on my HDMI cable (can't return ordered on Ebay). Also after reading different forums on this LG HD DVD player I am thinking about just returning it and go back to my old Panasonic DVD using component output. I also read that these DVD players are not using true HD through this HDMI port but just upconverting, is there a big difference in video between component out and HDMI out?

At this current time for reasons that only those in the industry know, hdmi audio will not transmit out the digital audio output in HDTVs, these digital audio outputs are for transmitting the DD signal from any of the sets internally received HDTV broadcasts. If you use the built-in ATSC tuner for reception then the digital audio output is there to send the DD bitstream to a AV receiver.
The hdmi input on HDTVs is for receiving high resolution video + audio, it is not intended to be used as a passthrough on to your AV receiver. And until hdmi switching AVR's are common and affordable you will need to use an optical/coaxial cable from your dvd/stb to the AVR just as you do now with component or dvi.

Once you've made sure that your dvd optical digital audio output is indeed pooched, you could try using coaxial if your AVR supports it, there may be settings in both the dvd player and AVR that you need to change especially when using hdmi. If you are unable to get digital audio from your dvd player then yes it certainly should returned.

DVDs are encoded at 480i, progressive players then de-interlace the signal into 480p, upconverting dvd players do the same and then rescale the 480p to near 720p/1080i resolution, since there are only 480 lines of information to begin with, it will never be HD. The trick is to fool our eyes into thinking we're watching higher resolution, some players/processors do this much better than others. And the better the illusion the higher the technology costs.

Thanks Maximus for the info. I will try my old basic Panasonic DVD player with component and digital out to see how that works and just forget about the HDMI DVD player if I like what I see / hear.

Default Figured it out

Just figured it out with some help from a friend, the setup works using the HDMI cable to the TV and the optic out from the DVD to the AV, I just realized there is a button on the AV to change the optic settings. All is good, the picture is great and sound is in 6.1. Very happy now.
