Often times in order to hear dialogue I have to max out the volume on my receiver. This is a 7.1 system and I've set the speakers manually many different ways, large or small, increased distance from viewer, maxed out decibel range (center channel and front) to no avail. This is usually with streaming media or on DirecTV, never with a Blu-ray disc. I suspect it's in the settings because I've had the same speakers (Onkyo from a previous HTIB) and didn't have this problem until fairly recently. I believe the range on the speakers is full range and 110 watts per and the receiver is 100 watts per channel. I use a Roku and changed to setting for audio from medium to high and it didn't help.
Could the receiver be failing? I know most higher end receivers have volume control with a minus factor. This one starts at 0 and maxs out at 73. There are times I have to set it at max and it is still not loud enough. Mostly its soft spoken dialogue, but I swear I'd get more volume out of the tv speakers at times. On a Blu-ray it would blow you out at that setting. I set the center channel at + 10 decibels and the fronts at +5. It helps, but it doesn't fix it. This just makes no sense to me. We watched the entire state of the union address at max volume. I'm replacing the receiver so I guess I would just like to understand what's wrong. No funny noises or buzzes of any kind, it's just not loud enough at any volume set.

A bit more about the configuration would help a bit.
Are you running the A/V through the receiver via an HDMI port or some other way? (coaxial or optical?) Here is a link to Sony's help site, they could help you out with this. https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model...?mdl=STRDN1000 |

I have the Directv HR44 Genie DVR attached to receiver with HDMI cable and then an HDMI cable to TV. Thanks for the link. |

Are you using the Genie's remote to control the volume or the Sony A/V receiver's remote?
It may be a setting in the Genie affecting this if your using the Sony remote to control the volume, this I can't help you with as I don't have one to play with. On some remotes for the satellite service receivers you can control the volume of an A/V receiver directly when watching satellite, you have to find a code for your A/V receiver and program the satellite receivers remote to do this, the manual for the Genie can help you with this. |

I'm using the RC73 Directv remote. It almost has to be in the receiver. I'm replacing it tomorrow, so I might hook it up in my basement with a different set of everything and see how it functions. Thank you so much. |
