Default Toslink Question

I have a 50" samsung tv, with comcast 1080 stb, ps3, and laptop for streamed video all hooked up via hdmi. Yesterday I purchased a cheap all in one box dvd player/5.1 surround sound. I got it really cheap otherwise I would have bought a real av receiver. The all in one is a panasonic SC-PT480. It only has 1 toslink input and I'm running it from the tv. The tv only outputs stereo sound to it because of the hdmi connection from my stb. The panasonic dvd/receiver changes it to surround for me but it isn't what is fed to it. I would rather hook the receiver straight to the comcast stb, but then will not be able to use the receiver for my ps3 or laptop without switching the toslink. My question to someone who is a little more knowledgable is there a significant difference Im going to notice with such a cheap surround sound system by having the receiver change the stereo sound to surround rather then have the stb send a 5.1 signal. Do you think its worth the trouble of switching the toslink. Or with such a cheap surround sound system it doesn't really matter?

Thank you for the help. I just found this forum and have enjoyed reading posts.

There are toslink switches available that will do the job, but really, take it back and get a true AV receiver.

I got the Panasonic all in one new in the box for 20 dollars off my neighbor who was moving. I don't have much extra money right now to buy a nice reciever andif iI got a new received I would probably have to buy new speakers because I'm guessing the ones I have now aren't very good. But back to my original question do u guys think it would be worth buying a toslink switch or just go with how I have it setup now since I don't have top end audio equipment would I even realistically hear a difference
