Thank you everybody for the responses. amf1932 - that was a good article and seems to be talking exactly about the problem I am having - HOWEVER - I am still not finding and solution. My receiver does have a "night" mode - but it seems to do little more than make everything quieter.

Everyone, please keep in mind that I have turned the center speaker all the way up, and the others, including the subwoofer, all the way down. I have the same issue, only now out of the center speaker only. Some sound effects only come out of the surround speakers, but it seems like things like gunshots come out the same speakers as the dialogue, for the most part. I mean... people are talking, so I turn up the volume just enough to be able to hear what they're saying... then BOOOM! A gunshot shakes the walls!

I know it's hard for anyone who's not here to listen and tell me, but I wish someone could just magically say what settings to use, lol.

I asked these questions earlier. Since no one on the forum can hear your system or see your receiver display, answers would be helpful.

After the reset, does raising the center volume and dropping the volume of the other speakers give you dialog and little in the way of music and effects?
I can assure you that the severity of what you describe - that music and effects overwhelm the dialog in the center channel itself - cannot happen in a properly configured system.

Sorry I didn't respond to those questions. The bluray player is the only thing I have ever run through the receiver. So I cannot comment on the other channels.

As for the AVR - well, thats where my lack of expertise comes into to play, lol. I dont really know what you're asking me there.

I have messed with the speaker volumes independently and do notice some difference in dialogue volume when the center is much higher than the others. BUT, in cases where there are overwhelming "BOOMS", it is still a drastic difference volume-wise. I still have to adjust it while I watch.

I hope that answers what you are asking me.

Let's start with the player. I have a panasonic BD55, which pretty much the same as the BD35. There are Digitial Audio output settings for both Dolby and DTS. They should be on Dolby/DTS not PCM.

Next, the AVR. Start on p22-23 and check the channel output levels. Play the test tones and make sure the channel levels all match. You can do this by ear, although it is best done with an SPL meter.

See p34 of the manual re: Sound field programs. Are any of those in use? If so, turn them off. p29 explains how to check on Sound fields during playback.
