Default New Home Theater System - No 5.1 from Netflix on Roku? I'm such a noob...

Hey guys,

Just got a new home theater system setup and I'm having a problem getting the surround sound working with Netflix, via my Roku. Netflix only puts out Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 which might be the problem, but I'm just too much of a noob to figure things out. Here's my setup...

TV: LG 50pv450
Home Theater System: Samsung HT-E550
Roku2 XD
Antenna
NO cable box

My Roku is connected to my TV via an HDMI, then my HTS is connected to my TV via optical audio (only connection the TV will take audio) and an HDMI. Antenna connected directly to my TV.

My audio works fine with Netflix and Roku set to stereo, but as soon as I set them to 5.1 and try to play a 5.1 movie, I get a small crackle, then video plays, and no audio.

Does anyone know whats going on? Is it possible for my setup to play Netflix in 5.1? Any help would be great, because I am very new to all of this!

Thanks

So all the audio connections are coming from your TV? That would be why you only get stereo. The optical out on your TV will only do stereo.

But my TV doesn't allow HDMI audio out, I already asked last week in a previous thread. Everyone said I could only use the optical on my TV

Yep. Unfortunately since your HT has no HDMI inputs stereo is what your are stuck with. You would need an AVR with HDMI inputs ( HDMI from Roku to AVR HDMI from AVR to TV to get 5.1 . I'm assuming the Roku has no optical out.
