So I tried all of the new settings and it sounds much better. I had it 20 and felt it was a little loud for my SAT so I set the reference level to -5db and it's perfect now. I can keep at 25 like my old 606 and you can hear it, but it's not too loud.

Well, I have a new problem with the above setup. It won't save the settings. I set it up, lock the settings, turn it off, then when I turn it back on later they are all back to the old default. I have the latest firmware, whatever version it is? Am I missing another setting somewhere on my 708?

Not sure. Maybe the 709 is different because once I put the new setting in it was done. It worked fine earlier today as well.

Well, I was surprised, there was a new update just today. Performed the update and now everything is working even better! I'm watching Conan right now with the volume on 12 (Extremely remarkable for my deaf ears) and the receiver is showing "Dolby D" from the Dish box (a 722K) by HDMI. Something it never did before.

Thanks Goofnut, you not only helped with settings, but after owning this thing probably a year, you gave me the kick in the butt to actually learn it finally!

EDIT: If you're a technogeek like me and like to read specs, here's the 708's;

No problem my friend.

I would also like to add that I set my DD 5.1 channels to output in PLIIx Movie mode. This prioritizes the dialogue in the center channel even better and throws in my two rear surrounds of my 7.1 setup. I also use this setting for any discs that utilize a lossy 5.1 codec. For anything lossless I let the player bitstream to the receiver as is. So if it's a DTS-HD MA/Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track then my rear surrounds do not get used. I used the same settings on my 606 for 4 years and never had a beef.

Yes, I went through and hard-coded everything for PLIIx and PLIIz for music. Except the part for Blu-rays where I left it on Straight Decode, where they can produce DTS-HD Master Audio, etc.

Then, I'm running 10 speakers, the 7.1 and the front "Presence" speakers. Except for the mains they are all mini 3-way Yamaha speakers, like a 6 inch woofer, then mid and tweeter. I never realized before that I could set these for "full band" instead of the 80Hz (THX) roll-off. I get a lot richer response out of them now. The system is MUCH louder and fuller sounding than before. And the subwoofer almost shakes the floor with the volume on 12. WOW!

The presence speakers make an incredible difference now, even though I technically don't have them set up right. They are supposed to sit like 6 feet BEHIND the TV, but the TV's up against the wall of course. They are supposed to give you that effect like when there's an explosion a quarter mile down the road you have a bit of delay until the sound would normally hit you. Even though they're not behind the TV, I still get the effect! For music they just act as another set of front speakers.

Plus, the Faroudja (sp?) processor has kicked in correctly. Don't know what I set there exactly, but I like it. I have a 58 inch Samsung plasma and it is suddenly clearer or sharper or something? Can't explain it exactly, but the wife and kid both walked in the room and said,"Geez, the picture looks really great?!?" It's that noticeable I guess?

Next, games are totally incredible. I play Call of Duty (naturally ) and the wife plays Skyrim and now you can hear everyone's foot steps walking around you. You can tell exactly which direction a sound is coming from. Before, I would get lucky now and then and "kind of" get it to sound right and we were always amazed at THAT. Now it's unbelievable! I have the soundfield set for Games - Action on top, then have Straight Decode set in the bottom slots.

Once again thanks for getting me started on actually figuring this thing out. I thought it was fine before, now I know what I actually paid for!

EDIT: You were saying about using PLIIx to get more Center channel. Just discovered if you press the "Video" button (top-right of the ring on the remote) you can manually adjust Bass, Treble, Center, Subwoofer, etc. and turn everything up or down, adjust the video processing, all sorts of things.
