Default Plasma vs LCD: latest LED backlight LCD tested

LCD technology is still developing while the Plasma technology is almost mature. Now a test has been conducted to look at the differences between them.

Plasma vs LCD

LED backlit technology from Samsung with their latest model, the LN-T5281F compared to the high-end Pioneer DP-5010FD Plasma TV.

Post Honest review?

A pointed statement in the review:

'I have to stress again, though, how incredibly close these pictures were in most respects. After discussion, we agreed to award the LCD a solid 8 on a scale of 1 to 10 for color accuracy. But it couldn't match the 9 we awarded the near-perfect plasma.'

Pretty much sums up this review for those who don't want to read the details. The future for LCD is still unfolding, with advances in the LED backdrop (perhaps utilizing tri-leds) we can anticipate an evermore narrowing gap until the day that back light is the display.

Notice that the referenced article is primarily a subjective evaluation/comparison with some objective data tossed in The reviewers arbitrarily assigned ratings from 1 to 10. In the one case, quoted by AH802, they even had to discuss how to rate. The data does support a reporting difference in gray-scale. A difference identified as subtle in a previous paragraph. ("Whether it was the differences in grayscale or a combination of factors, there was definitely a subtle difference between the color balance of the two sets.") Is a subtle difference worth 1.5pts, 1pt, .5 pts? Or, should it be rated in the same fashion they rated resolution? "The Samsung LCD was slightly better at cleanly reproducing the highest-resolution portion of 1080i and 1080p test patterns, while the Pioneer plasma introduced a bit of noise in that area " They rated both displays with a 10 in this instance. These are subjective ratings.

I wonder why they did not report a measured CR? This has always been a hot topic when comparing PDPs and LCDs. I agree that manufacturer's CRs are nearly meaningless but I thought ratings reported by reviewers/testers were considered reliable.

The bottom line is that not many people will have these two sets side by side in their homes. Without this side-by-side luxury, my 'guess' is that either set will blow your socks off.

So we remain with the standard advice, buy what looks best to you, not what others tell you is best in 'their eyes'.
