Well as for myself, I'm waiting for transporters and holo-decks to be perfected.

Post Study concludes only 16.6% knows diffs in formats.

The research targeted two different groups – one consisting of tech-savvy readers of the Impress Watch websites and the other a more general group of non-nerds.

Among the gadget fans, it’s no shock that more than half (57.8 per cent) of respondents knew how Blu-ray and HD DVD differ, but the story in the other group was very different. Of the more ‘general’ public, only 16.6 per cent grasped the differences.

I'm sure these links don't translate into U.S. sales...

Well that's understandable. They *look* the same, and many people think if it looks the same, then it should work.

This is a really central concept, because this is the market that determines what gets manufactured and what doesn't, and that's important to people like us.

But there's a point to be made there. DVDs don't just sell for $16, many big box stores (Walmart, the supermarket, etc.) have big racks bulging with SD-DVDs on sale for as little as $3.95. When you can stick one of these into an upconverting DVD player and get 95% of the PQ you get with a $30 HD/BR-DVD, that's going to be plenty for a lot of people, and in many cases I would be one of them.

Sure, I love the fine points of a top notch HD/BR movie as well as anybody, but in general, just killing a Friday night watching a movie with some chips and dip in the living room, that upconverted $3.95 movie will be just fine. Like others have said here, the prices need to come down before the market can really take off.

I'm one of them. It's just a movie. Now if it was a masterpiece like Gone with the Wind or Ben-Hur, then yes I want HD, but for the latest Hollywood crap? Forget it. (In fact, a lot of times I watch the latest movies online, which can oftentimes be worse than VHS.)

The porn industry has the right idea. You can buy a HD DVD or Bluray for only $1-2 more than the standard definition DVD. That makes it worthwhile.

Hollywood may end up priciing High Def discs too high, as they did with Super VHS tapes, and end up killing the standard because of greed.

Can a mod correct the title to Blu-ray from Blur-ray? I would have thought this thread would never be resurrected but it was.
