If cable/satellite companies transmit HDTV in the 10-15 Mbps range, then how come the picture looks so much worse than an HD DVD like Batman Begins whose average bit rate is 13.5 Mbps? Is it because they transmit the signal in MPEG-2 or something?

Yes, the signals are compressed using the MPEG-2 algorithm. It seems that the amount of compression is variable but I am not sure how this is done. I read somewhere that the satellite signals are compressed using “adaptive” compression rates based on the amount of bandwidth one channel needed was compensated for by the others. This is really esoteric stuff. Good ‘ol vinyl only had 2 channels. You knew that the needle was worn when the high frequencies would break up…. BTW, the new D*TV satellites will use MPEG-4 – supposed to be better…..
