A snipit from a recent article on the penetration of HDTV world wide:
The number of households worldwide with HDTVs is expected to jump from the current install base of 48 million to 151 million in 2011. Still, 151 million HDTV sets is a far cry from the current 1.2 billion SDTVs currently in service around the globe. The study also showed that the United States and Japan are the biggest purchasers of HDTV taking in 58% and 20% respectively of the global market. |

Wait till X-mas 2007. Every households in the US will get one of those flat TV. I got so spoiled by HD program that I don't even want to watch Analog TV anymore. DVD looks so much nicer on LCD too. I wish all the network would just turn their HD switch on 24/7 |

Figure about 4 to 7 years for the lions share of channels adding HD programming. As far as 100% . . .probably never. . . crystal ball gets cloudy after 10 years. |

The HDTV transition is like that of black and white to color (for those of us old enough to remember - and not toooo old to forget) and it won't be toooo long before SD goes the way of black and white TV...

If you say 30 years from now I would agree that maybe we will be all HDTV 24/7. So look at the numbers I showed in the first post, then look at my predictions based on articles i have read. So by my calculations at the end of 2008 there should be around 120 million HDTV's world wide. The total population of TV's in the world is 1.2 Billion. only 90% more to go! PS . . I am old enough to remember 2 color shows on Sunday night only . . .all others were B & W. Grandfather was in the TV business. . . started in 1949. From 1960 to 1968, if you bought a color TV from J.C. Penny, you bought one of my grandfathers TV sets. Last edited by Lee Stewart; 03-11-2007 at 07:51 PM.. |

I too remember the transition from B&W to color TV, however I also remember the transition from tape to DVD and I see the transitions accelerating. While its easy to forget that most of my friends and acquaintences are still in tube land, I think the elimination of tube products at CC, Best Buy, Costco, Sams club, etc. will drive a much faster change this time around.

Same problem exists today as existed back then . . .not all programming is in HDTV and many channels only show HD programming during the 3 hr prime time viewing segment of the 24 hr day. I believe there are something like 20 channels that provide HD yet only 3 or 4 come to mind that provide it 100% of the time 24/7. I will have to disagree with you on the acceleration factor. HDTV will mimic Color TV as far as acception in the home and developement of programming. It tookColor TV 13 years (53 to 66) before ALL programming was in color . . . with 12 channels available to the public. We now have over 100 channels and 7 years later . . . 4 are 24/7 HDTV |
