i read an article in yesterday's Wall Street Journal (march 8/06). the review was favorable with the caveats that it's yet another box to deal with (although the size of a slim dvd player) and has a limited selection of movies (~100 perhaps).

for the future, though, since this is a disney owned venture, you can be sure that once they work the kinks out of it, this could literally replace blockbuster/hollywood and possibly even netflix b/c you won't have to wait for mail or go to a store and will be able to browse flicks based on your mood and timing.

They failed to provide bandwidth specifications which makes me nervous.

All we need are MP3 versions of HD movies.

Yup, checked it out a few weeks ago. It's available in my area...

I'm interested, but my concerns include:

1) Viability and longevity of its business model. It looks great, but will people buy into it and for how long?

2) Cost and selection of HD movies obviously target a niche market. Participants of forums like this are probably the only people even somewhat aware of its existence.

3) Of those interested, how many people actually have access, given the (questionable) medium currently being used for broadcast?

Once this, or similar service(s), migrate to broadband and networkability over HTPC (PC) devices is factored in, I could see it gathering a following and developing market penetration. This assumes HTPC's may also develop a strong following.

As it stands... seems a lot like a Voom venture, IMO.

i also have another concern regarding censorship.

i'm afraid that b/c disney owns it, the movies available will be edited the way blockbuster does for content they don't like.

good point. The bandwidth problem is also a concern, didnt even think of that till someone wrote it.....well there will always be some early adopter who either helps it along or eats the bullett for the rest of us.
