Post CableCARD and the new world of total end-to-end encryption

ARS Technica has an outstanding article on cablecards (those pcmcia plug in devices that should allow you to see digital HD on slotted TV's). Clearly the first generation has a lot of limits...V2 seems to be the ticket (two way), but will not be out until the middle of the year or longer.. and the ultimate solution DCAS (more or less the pcmcia card in software) will be at 2007+ and the upcoming MS Vista release will onl;y support V1.0 and you'll need OEM certified equipment to get HD signals on your PC. (ATI is working on a graphic card with a cablecard slot).

There's a lot of information in this article.

Sadly CC 2.0 isn't honestly going to be out till 2007 and then they'll kill it due to DCAS and then DCAS won't come out till 2010.

The cable industry has been pathetic in delivering this device which overall is ridiculously simple, by comparison to a great many high tech items of today. Think of it this way, entire cpu's have been designed, tested, built and released in less time than it's taken the cable industry to bring out CC 2.0.

So don't hold your breath that CC 2.0 will ever hit the light of day. Better to hope for Fios and better prices and maybe the burning smolder of competition will teach the cable companies a thing or two about "serving a market" fast and efficiently.

Comcast,Albuquerque. Promised CC 2.0 for install on the 24th with the 20 dollar install. I cant wait but if the install tech doesnt have the 2.0 with him/her. I'll be pissed off, and just hang on to the DVR-HD.

The 24th of what? Feb 24th, 2008???

Either they misrepresented the facts or you misunderstood. Either way, you may as well call now and cancel, because the tech won't have one with him/her. It will save them a wasted trip; it will save you from getting even more pi$$ed off ( ) and having to argue over paying the $20 trip charge (not to mention waiting around all day for them to show up).

Nope! I heard correctly "Kim" from Comcast said and I quote "we have 2.0 Cable Cards". Cut me some slack, I'd be happy to let you know on the 24th of Feb. 2006 . Like I said if they mislead me then, I don't want the Cable Card.
AND you can wish me luck.......................

How's the new CableCard 2.0 working out since you got it installed on Friday???

p.s. After re-reading your post, I wonder if she meant that they have "TWO" CableCards, not "2.0" CableCards...

Smile Update

Once again, I specifically asked for a 2.0 Cable Card. Kim stated yes,she asked her supervisor. Should you feel the need to call , here 505-344-0690 ext/6315.
But I will honor, my usage. Cable Card was installed yet some channels (HD too) wouldn't program, some channels had no sound. Cable Card error message would come up. Cable guy was stumped, so I called PannyUSA, "Lonnie" advised check my Panny version.
Press " + " volume on remote and Plasma Panel at the same time, wait about five seconds and Software version info comes on screen. Lonnie advised my firmware version was out of date and to contact local Panny authorized repair service "Crown TV and Repair. I have a appointment on March 6th at 11am, for firmware "at home" upgrade.

To get to the point, Comcast tech, couldnt get Cable Card to authorize signal, so Comcast will come back on the 6th after Panny upgrade. The Cable Card was a Scientific Atlanta CC, the card only had model and serial number on the back of it. Yet there was a manufacture date or inspection of 03-15-2005 on it. Now, that tells me it won't be a 2.0..........so in closing, should it be corrected I want to keep CC whether or not its 2.0 because the channels were in 16:9 format which I liked without any changes using Panny or SA-STB-8300HD. Yet I have been ragging on Comcast for not providing 2.0 CC, so how knows maybe the next tech. will bring 2.0.
To agree with everyone, I'm not holding my breath on the 2.0 CC.

This article should also let you know the cable people have no clue what they are talking about.
