Default Surround Sound Speaker Set Up by THX Home Entertainment site

A very informative site is the DOLBY HOME THEATER GUIDE.
For all aspects of home theater education and setup assistance.

This is an exceptional informative interactive site to help guide you through your speaker positioning issues, your connectivity issues and Home Theater Basic's by connecting to each type of setup 2.1/5.1/7.1 This is one of the better sites for info:

THX Entertainment site has a fairly well described and easily understood speaker set-up article that may prove to be helpful to those perplexed with set-ups for 7.1 / 5.1/ and Dolby® TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio™ Set Up

The only additional info would be regarding the use of frt height speakers, which should be placed above your display approx 10" down from your ceiling and angled toward viewing position for best results.

What about 7.1 channel home theater? Most new AV receivers are 7.1, would a properly setup 7.1 system sound better than 5.1? Maybe.

Seven channel systems work best in large rooms, say 17 feet by 24 feet or larger. The whole idea of 7.1 is to supply a more complete wrap-around sound experience than 5.1. However, when the speakers are closer together in a smaller room, the extra speakers are less important. Especially when the sofa is up against the rear wall--there's no way to achieve behind-the-listener sound anyway. If you want your surround system to sound as good as it can, run the receiver's auto setup/calibration program.

In any case the differences between 5.1 and 7.1 are usually pretty subtle, it's not like adding those two extra speakers makes a huge difference in perceived sound quality. It's not worth agonizing over.

I do agree unless you have a large room 7.1 does little in a small room. I have done both in a small room.

I'm sure it will. As the number of speakers increases so does the complication of placement and sometimes the narrowing of the sweet spot. As was said earlier, unless you have a large room, 7.1 doesn't offer much if any benefit. The wide and height surround speakers do much more in terms of adding to the listening experience.

Surprised I can even put such thoughts together...hehehe.
