Default Obama Administration Announces Massive Piracy Crackdown

After countless lobbyist dollars from the music and film industry and a brief "public review", the administration rolled out its vision to fight piracy yesterday afternoon. U.S. Vice President Joe Biden -- whose blunt speech has sometime left him in trouble -- did not mince words.

He states, "This is theft, clear and simple. It's smash and grab, no different than a guy walking down Fifth Avenue and smashing the window at Tiffany's and reaching in and grabbing what's in the window."

Finally they say something I agree with. Start locking people up for this theft and see how much bandwidth gets free'd up.

It also implements an interesting provision called "imminent infringement", which allows the government to charge people who they think might be about to infringe with a civil offense (for example if you searched "torrent daft punk"). This is among the first official "thought crime" provisions to be proposed by the U.S. government.
Uhhh does this scare anyone else?

You think? There are times I have made such a search to try to see what the torrent was all about. Maybe not with daft punk, but other torrent searches. I can say I only did one torrent download just to see what was involved. The time involved was not worth the results. Pretty scary that they would come and look me up for being curious.

If it doesn't, it certainly should. Who knows just how this will be used...political affiliation, privacy advocate, etc. I can see selective targeting handwriting on the wall.

This does worry me, thought crimes? great.

This one i'm with all of you on.

Also.. piracy..theft? no.

they do not lose any actual product, nor do they lose any money.

they only lose POTENTIAL.

All this will do is move piracy further underground, in to darknets and such. It's already happened with shadier and scarier things found online.

And yes, it may become scary. I know someone that was downloading for commercial purposes movies and now he is forbidden to use at all the computer, otherwise he will go to jail. Now he has to pay some damages to the websites, over 40.000$. Isn't this becoming scary?
