Default If this rumour is true, GOODBYE Blu Ray

A member of Neogaf is claiming that a member of staff from his local Gamestop store has relayed that Microsoft is preparaing to introduce a totally new SKU next year complete with a built in HD-DVD player known as the 'Xbox Ultimate'. Although this rumor should be taken very lightly, as the source of the news is very questionable (i.e. the all knowing Gamestop employee).

I said to my mate last week, if they release a 360 with built in HD DVD, they will call it Xbox Ultimate, looks like i predicted right!!!!

If this is true, I think it will spell death for Blu ray!!!!

Please dont try and argue this point Blu ray fanboys, it will be all over...

samcan, you know I love you and all, but man, this rumour sounds very true, MS dont support blu ray, they support HD DVD.

if this guy got a SKU for it, 99% it will happen!!!

samcan, what movies will u buy in HD DVD

SKU's when u scan them into your system, they come up with the product...

in this case "Xbox 360 ULTIMATE"

HEY fox and disney, if u are reading this, when are pirates and die hard coming to HD DVD

I think thats the reason why Toshiba and Universal have been quiet, becuase once they announce this, then it will be the final blow to Blu Ray, anyone who thinks Blu ray will survive after this happens is a moron! real moron...

what do u mean?

Nah this rumour has been going round for abit, but this guy got a SKU!!!

if this SKU is real, then its the real deal, the 360 kills the PS3 in sales basically everywhere except Japan.

My thoughts are HD DVD will win, as there will be now the 360 effect for HD DVD.

Once they win Blu ray will become a computer media format, like backing up data on Blu ray becuase it holds more...

I think Disney will come over to HD DVD in the next 6 months especially if the Ultimate comes out... and MAYBE even fox...

HD DVD will win... I can feel it, Blu ray will become another BetaMax and UMD and other crap Sony has tried to take over the world with...

sam, the rumour has been channeling through UK retail distribution chains as well. I posted it somewhere in a thread a while back. It's a strong rumour and has been for a while. I doubt it'd kill Blu Ray though. PS3 sales are only going to get more competitive as time moves on and with non HD DVD enabled 360s also availible, most people would choose them and save a few hundred.

I'd buy one in an instant though I need a newer 360 for quieter operating noise, more reliable chipset etc, a built in HD DVD drive would just be the icing on the cake.

Mike people would sell their 360's just to get the Ultimate.

This will SPIKE HD DVD sales and 360 sales, why buy a LCD tv fi you cant view HD movies? Why not just buy a 360 and you can get a HD DVD player and the best games console on the planet with Halo 3 and Halo Wars

mark my words, it will be the end of Blu ray.

Disney will come over (think about xbox live marketplace)

then Universal will be like F$!k you Sony

I don't think that many people would sell 360s for an Ultimate though.

They'd want to bundle a HD DVD or 2 in with the console though (or the 5 film rebate) that would probably shift quite a few systems. Of course, unlike the PS3, every 360 "Ultimate" sold would actually have been sold as a HD DVD player as well, as people without HDTV or no interest wouldn't bother buying it just for a HD DVD drive.

Would have to be $499 or less to be even remotely on a level playing field with the PS3. If it did happen, I'd expect it'd be next year for $399 with the premium an elite models having further price reductions if not reducing the Elite to premium pricing and doing away with the premium system altogether.

HD DVD sure could use MS fuller participation via including the HD DVD drive in their 360. The cost of the drives are going down so I don't why they wouldn't do it next year. Hope it's true but I won't get my hopes up yet...
