Default Strong Q3 lineup of Blu-ray titles

There are some really big guns coming out in the 3rd quarter for Blu-ray, both in catalog and new release.

8/18: Hunger Games ($404 million BO gross and still growing)
8/25: The Avengers ($611 million and growing)

Catalog
8/14: Jaws
9/10: Titanic
9/18: Indiana Jones
9/25: Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection
9/25: James Bond Ultimate Collection

10/2: Universal's Monster Collection

So, given that ammo, Blu-ray should do pretty well the next few months. But my question is, will they have blown their wad like they did last year and leave relatively little for the last 2 months of the year, or if not, what DO they have lined up so far for Q4?

Also, what other huge releases (if any) are scheduled for this quarter?
Kosty and TowerGrove like this.

For me, Avengers for sure. Maybe the indy series if it doesn't include the last movie. Otherwise I can wait seeing how far prices will drop. I would have bought Titanic. But I have an HD copy on my DVR that I've watched a few times recently. And Jaws which I love I've watched a million times. So I can wait on that until it hits under 10 bucks. That's the problem with consumers seeing these low prices. But it's a catch 22 for Bluray I guess.

Well, for me, Blu is currently slim for quality releases.

I think I will let the studios worry about that. I don't care as a consumer. As you can see in post #4 they (studios) will be getting plenty of my money in the next few months.

Good for you. Enjoy your hobby. I'm a much smarter shopper these days. I'll usually wait for a price drop.

Those 3Q titles will help Blu-ray to be sure.

But last year the pattern was that Blu-ray also did quite well reaching a peak of about +27% YoY before the poor December 2012 vs the stronger December 2010 releases that included a Twilight Saga release, Toy Story 3 and 2010's Despicable Me drove the cumulative HMM Blu-ray YoY statistics down 10 % down to +17% by the end of the year (DEG was higher).

That's not going to happen this year as there was not a Twilight Saga release in December 2011 and this December is looking like it will have better releases than last year IIRC.

Indy will drop like a rock. Not paying $70 to watch this on release. Give it a few months and I'll nab it for half.

I've purchased very few titles this year. Im pretty much through buying discs.

This is exactly what will happen. Common consumer sense tells us that if we wait, prices will drop, and with blu ray in the bargain bins, it's a no brainer.
Avengers will definitely be a record breaker, but Jaws or Titanic? The wad is blown in the third quarter.

Display manufacturers have announced slacking sales of recent 3D display panels neither LCD or Plasma have performed to expected results ..........Hm let me see less and less quality display panels being sold, ..which will result in 2013 production numbers being reduced and with no NEW technology to breakout, sales of BDP will level off, as most HDer's will have a BDP in their system with no new technology so, no need to upgrade. So, in turn, sales of Disc material settles back with most buys being limited to HiProfile BR's, chosen by Quality productions and Specialty Movies and then the PQ/AQ ratings these are the priorities for purchase commitment.

I would love to own those, but having underplayed them on the DVDs I have owned for many years, my practical side says I will have to pass. However my practical side is often not the most dominant side of my personality and if there are salivating PQ reviews coupled with a wicked price drop or sale (or two), then one (or more) of those sets will likely make it onto my living shelf at some point.

They are good tent poles for Q3 (although Universal's Monster collection is for the first week in Q4). Thanks for the info and I added them to the above list.

Are there any $300 million plus box office movies forecast for release in Q4?

The only two movies in 2012 to do $300M+ at the USA BO - you have already listed for Q3.

So all the big guns will have been fired before the Q4 even starts?

It's what I thought, OD blowing its wad early again this year. Even earlier than last year. Obviously an intentional move by the studios to get OD into consumer's minds right off the bat as Xmas shopping season seems to start sooner every year. This way they have attractive product to offer from the get go and they just hope to ride out the momentum on fumes in Nov-Dec.

I suspect THE DARK KNIGHT RISES will do over $300M and get released in December like TDK did.

AFAIK, the next highest grossing movie so far is MADAGASCAR 3 at $200M
