Even if they killed off DVD completely overnight, I don't think Blu-ray could get to $4.7 billion next year. Most of DVD sales have nothing to do with new releases. The format is stacked and is sold virtually everywhere.

Blu-ray already has close to 40% of the new release market, and even if they gobbled up the rest of that overnight, it's still likely to get outsold by DVD. The DVD tail could probably stretch 3 times around the globe.

So basically all this time player sales comparison talk has been apples to oranges?

I remember them using it in CES 2009, saying Blu-ray is growing faster than DVD.

Quote:
since inception, in roughly two-and-a-half years on the market, Blu-ray has sold over 10.7 million players in the United States market. This number includes PS3 systems that make up approximately 65% of the players reported with standalone players making up the remaining 35%. PC drives are not included in these numbers. By contrast, DVD, widely acclaimed as the most successful consumer electronics format ever launched, had only sold 5.4 million players by the end if the format's third year on the market. Clearly, Blu-ray is heavily outpacing DVD adoption.

bruceames:

Here is some monthly data I have for all DVD related categories from DEG.

The DEG data here is this query includes set-top and portable DVD players. Home Theater In a Box Systems, TV/DVD combos and DVD/VCR combination players. No game consoles.

I think the differences between the two datasets is that the CEA cited by TheDigitalBits is only set top standalone DVD players and the DEG data below has the other categories.

Hope it helps

Thanks Kosty. BTW, I wonder if you or anybody knows what the DEG reported for DVD sales in 1997 and 1998. Or any other source? The DEG reports I've seen only go back to 1999.

Also, I remember Lee posting a table that listed yearly VHS sales (and DVD as well I think). It would be nice to know what VHS did compared to DVD.

I think this was unrevised Rentrak DEG data before last years EOY 2010 report when rentrak revised historical data, or it may include the revised dat

According to that, 38.65 million were sold in the first 5.25 years, as opposed to the 33 million in the CEA data. So that leaves a little over 5 million in portable/other DVD players.

I don't think portable Blu-ray players have sold nearly in that quantity, have they?

Thanks. It would be nice having pre-1997 VHS data. Of course most of that would be rental, I wonder what the prevailing rental percentage was: 70% or so?

Also noticed that the BD data above is shifted as starting one year later. It was $0.3 billion starting in 2007, not 2008.

This is pre 1997 data it starts in 1981.

It also includes rental data so its definitely from Rentrak and its older than 10 years so its Rentrak data even if it came from DEG.

I think that cut and paste just shifted the columns for Blu-ray/HD DVD over it should be tabbed over a column.

Same thing for Digital/VOD.

It should look like this screenshot:

Also, I remember Lee posting a table that listed yearly VHS sales (and DVD as well I think). It would be nice to know what VHS did compared to DVD.

I think this was unrevised Rentrak DEG data before last years EOY 2010 report when rentrak revised historical data, or it may include the revised data.

Interesting Rentrak chart. It shows VHS sell through peaking at $5.2 billion in 1996, so that seems like a doable goal for Blu-ray.

Also interesting is the stability of rental spending (not considering inflation of course) since 1990.

Funny that in the DVD player chart, by the time we get to 2010, Q4 sales are not much more than they are any other time of year. DVD players have pretty much ceased to be a gift. But the jumps in Q4 2000 and 2001, wow.
